Galatina is a very old town full of history and baroque vestiges, 20 km south of Lecce. There are many churches of high artistic value, among which, the "Basilica di Santa Caterina di Alessandria" with its precious cycle of paintings, stands out. Galatina is surrounded by a lovely countryside and is near one of the most beautiful Italian seashores: 20 km from the Ionian sea and 25 km from Adriatic sea. Salento offers a varied coastline dotted with watchtowers, marinas and hidden inlets, narrow sandy shores give way to precipitous cliffs with marine caves and intimate and inviting coves.
Galatina is a perfect starting point for visiting interesting towns such as :
Otranto, and cathedral of the Annunziata with a grandiose interior and a highly original floor mosaic, telling stories from the Bible, mankind and stories of King Arthur and of Charlemagne; Gallipoli, which extends into the sea on a headland and small island joined by a bridge; Lecce, the "Florence of South Italy " with the artistic and architectural treasures, inspired by the characteristic Baroque style created by able craftsmen using the tender "Lecce Stone"; the Greek villages (6 km from Galatina) of Salento are of particular cultural interest, and form a linguistic island, a sort of jewel of Graecism that has survived. . All these places are quickly reachable by driving along picturesque roads crossing the Salento region.
