First, not a VRBO property but an affiliate (RAKUTEN) which made communication with the host nearly impossible. The host did not provide the access code to the apartment before the stay. We were forced to reach out via phone to receive the access code (1 hour plus after arrival waiting in the entryway) A strong chemical smell upon entering the unit, had to open the windows to air it out. Even after opening windows, if you open the cabinets the smell returned. Underneath the sink there were unmarked bottles of chemicals, which were possibly cleaners or other chemicals but no labels. Heat pump had a lot of buildup, not necessarily mold but lots of dark spots. There was a lot of dust/grease on top of the appliances as if they had not been cleaned in a while. Cooking pans in cabinets were uncleaned and had dried food on them. The refrigerator section of the fridge/freezer stopped cooling and we were forced to throw away 7500 worth of food. No response to a message about the fridge. Western style beds were extremely stiff, more than others. Lots of notes about “not eating/drinking on surfaces” like the futon couch which was terribly stained. Only positives were the great water pressure for the shower, the heated toilet seat and the two block distance to Sapporo Station. Overall, the price does not make the stay.
