The property is very nice and is directly on the beach. It was spacious and just what we needed! Our host was kind and checked in with us during the week and was always available when we had questions. Our only issue were some gnats outside that kept trying to get inside, but it was a small thing compared to the wonderful villa. Also, a variety of restaurants, supermarkets, and a gym are all within walking distance.

Beautiful beachside location

This beautiful house over 4 floors offers spacious modern accommodation. Large garden is private and has access to the beach. The property is situated down a long driveway so the main road is inaudible from the house. The location and its facilities along with its proximity to tavernas and supermarkets makes this our ideal family holiday. The hotel next door has recently (2025) changed to an adult only wellness/luxury retreat, there is very little to no disturbance from the neighbouring property. This is our 3rd stay at the house, we love it here. The manager is super friendly and helpful.

Lovely beach location

Beautiful modern property set over 4 floors. Well equipped. The beach front location was superb. Although there are adjoing properties, we didnt feel overlooked. The pool and gardens were immaculately kept. The cleaning team were very thorough and the manager was available on Whats App for any queries. The resort area has a good selection of tavernas and a couple of beach bars. The bakery is 30m from the entrance to the property and well worth a daily walk for fresh croissants and pastries. Whilst not a 'picturesque' area, there are plenty of shops, hire car and excursion companies. There was a small selection of water sports but these didnt domiate the beach. There was plenty of space on the beach, mostly couples and a few young families. The beach is a mix of shale and sand. The sea was a bit sore on barefeet as there is a large rocky area to be navigated. There was a lifeguard on duty. The villa has its own private sun loungers on the beach, accessed directly from the villa garden. The main road was busy but not overly so. The old town is a short drive away (car parking is outside of the pedestrianised old town, it was busy with traffic on the outskirts on the sunday we visited, and one large car park is closed on Thursdays due to the flea market). The old town is pretty, with a scattering of boutique hotels, gelato shops, coffee shops, and tourist gift shops, tavernas etc. Overall a lovely relaxing holiday.

Seaside gem with wonderful owner

We had an idyllic stay at Villa al Mare. Exactly as listed. Maria-Virginia was very helpful and friendly from booking until we left going above and beyond what we would normally expect from a holiday let. The villa is situated in a small resort but within 15mins (taxi) or 30 mins (bus) of Rethymno city and within an hours drive of ancient sites, beautiful beaches and pretty villages, lakes and canyons.

Une très belle maison parfaitement située face à la mer.

Accueil aimable. Magnifique maison, bien organisée. Chambres et salles de bain spacieuses et parfaites. Ménage fait tous les deux jours. Cependant la maison manque d'équipement, verres et plats de service. Plage de sable directement accessible en face de la maison. Baignade parfois difficile à cause des rouleaux.

A Fantastic property - Superb location!

Villa El Mare is a gem of a property. It is such a well designed villa - not only making the most of the stunning position but also creating a space that is full of light. The owner makes the whole experience superb - Maria is always on hand to sort out any issues, but also both her and her family are so generous bringing over gorgeous fresh produce from their garden and baking lovely cakes! The attention to detail in the property are excellent - the beds are super comfy! Being able to move from the pool to the beach throughout the day, having all the amenities on your doorstep makes this a villa which really is the most idyllic place to spend your holiday. I cant recommend it enough!

Great beach villa

Warm welcome by Maria's sister Myrto. The pictures accurately represent the property. Beautiful home, comfortable beds and pillows, great location and very responsive host. Maria was very helpful in restaurant and day trip recommendations. Property location allowed for easy access to Heraklion and Chania. Rethymno is easily accessible by car (10-15min drive). Our family of 4 (2 adults and children ages 13 and 14) had more than enough room and enjoyed the pool and beach.

Modern Villa Well Depicted By The Site Photographs

First impressions were of a modern large villa in a great location on the beach. We received a warm welcome even though it was evening when we arrived. There is a good choice of local restaurants all within metres of the property. A great bakery and a fair sized supermarket are both very close by. We always ate outside on the patio, in the wonderful climate, but there was adequate table space to eat inside too. We were a party of 5 adults and 3 children ages 9, 10 and 13 and we all loved staying in this villa and everyone agreed we would like to return. What could be better having a pool and being on the beach. We were even brought cakes, clearly home-made, by the ladies servicing the villa. How kind is that! It has been a week since we returned and we are all looking back on this as a special holiday largely due to the Villa al Mare. If we were to make any comments other than the above we might warn families to watch out for the children running around with wet feet after swimming in the pool, as we found that the tiles could be a bit slippery. Not a criticism, just something to watch out for.

A Lovely modern , cleverly designed villa, ideal for large groups and families, right on the beach !

We had a lovely time at Villa al Mare. We had a lovely welcome from Maria and her family were on hand to help during our stay. The villa is very well designed to accommodate a large group of people with a variety of possibilities for sleeping arrangements. A lot of natural light is designed to enter the villa. The lower ground floor is essentially a self contained area with 2 rooms and bathroom and separate access to the garden. Fabulous balconies overlooking the beach. Very modern and clean internally and furniture. Great garden, perfect pool and sun loungers and straight onto the beach, with beach access to tavernas and beach bars. A two minute walk to a number of shops, small supermarkets and restaurants to meet all your needs. A visit to the old town of Rethymno and the Venetian harbour is a must. Lovely cobbled streets, shops,bars , restaurants and historical buildings. A great villa to be self contained and self sufficient...everything you need at your feet.

Fabulous!!

Our stay at Villa al Mare was all that we hoped it would be and more! The property is beautiful both indoors and out. It has a comfortable, modern aesthetic. We were 4 adults and 4 children and had plenty of space both indoors and outdoors. Having a lovely pool and being on the ocean was wonderful -- kids and adults went from the sea to the pool and back again all day. The house is private, yet just a short walk from tasty tavernas, a bakery (with ice cream) and a supermarket. We watched the sun set each night from the outdoor chaises and the decks on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the house. We loved eating meals at the outdoor table, which comfortably seated us all. We were also pleased that Villa al Mare is centrally located for exploring Chania, Rethymnon and the western part of Herakleion. Maria Virginia, the owner, is wonderful! She greeted us when we arrived, showed us around, and was accessible throughout our visit if we needed her. In addition, she kept us supplied with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers from her garden (yum!) and raki. Villa al Mare is a wonderful haven and we recommend it to all. We hope that we are able to return there some day soon.
