A lovely property, great location for exploring the local area. The pool was amazing, especially as the weather was so hot! 45 min drive to Carcassonne rather than the walking distance listed on VRBO otherwise listing was accurate with everything needed for a great stay.

Family Holiday with Teens

Perfect mix of rustic charm and mod cons. Very quiet and private pool area with extra outdoor towels, good parasol and comfy loungers. Useful extra touches like amazing BBQ, sharp knives, bluetooth speaker, mosquito supplies, etc.. Short walk to Esperaza, which is a friendly town with some good bars and restaurants. Thank you 😊

A lovely, well-equipped cottage in a tranquil location. Our children adored the pool, and the property felt very private and peaceful. Although the location information provided by VRBO was slightly inaccurate (Carcassonne is a 45-minute drive away, not a 14-minute walk!), we had everything we needed in the nearby villages. The only downside of our stay was that we arrived during a heatwave, and this made it very difficult to stay comfortable unless we were in the pool! If the windows were open at all in the morning or evening, we would all immediately get bitten by mosquitoes, but when they were closed, it was roasting inside. I think we were just very unlucky with the weather (35 temperatures for much of the stay), but this is worth knowing if you are visiting in the summer.

Thank you for your review Katya. The mapping location issue has been raised with the platform, however the description of the property describes that it not located close to Carcassonne and this is reiterated in the Welcome Guide. I am sorry that you had to experience a heatwave but this was quite common this summer, and we advise during hot weather to keep the shutters shut during the day and open the windows at night - after dusk to avoid mosquitoes - and use the fan ceilings at the same time. As it's an old house with thick walls it should keep the house cool but this just needs a bit of adjustment. Thank you very much for choosing the Railway Cottage for tour holiday.

Rooms were in very poor condition. The master bedroom had no bed linen, looked like old sheets and throws to use. Twin room had a quilts but no covers. Bed settee had no quilt and no covers. No bath towels. Record player didn’t work and the the dishwasher failed on the last day Advertising is indicated that it was 14 minutes walk to Carcassonne but it was a 45 drive, so useless for our intention to explore the citte

I am disappointed that you didn't find the house as expected. I communicated with you during your stay without any response. Clean linen has always been provided so as towels for the bathroom and the pool. We kindly accommodated for 2 extra people when the house only cater for 4 people and extra bedding was provided. Extra blankets were available too. Maintenance people, who provided me with pictures, found the gate open, the house unusually dirty with scatterred rubbish to take away. The distance from Carcassonne was an error from the platform which appeared this year and has now been rectified.

Charmantes Ferienhaus in ruhiger Lage

Alles, was man braucht, ist vorhanden.

Lovely cottage in beautiful setting.

A lovely cottage in a quiet village location. Well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and cosy lounge. A good sized sunny garden with comfy loungers. A great area for walking, canoeing, historic castles and towns ... cycling for the very fit as it's quite hilly. Spectacular landscape at the base of the Pyrenees, still very green even mid September. Owners have been helpful and prompt to respond to email.

Loved it!

We loved our stay, the cottage is beautiful, well equipped and very cosy! The garden is lovely and we had a great time eating outside. We definitely recommend staying here, there's many beautiful villages surrounding the area and it is great for a peaceful countryside retreat. The only issue was that the BBQ was dirty and therefore we didn't use it, but this didn't spoil our trip! :-)

Quiet, restful and convenient, clean and compact.

We spent two very enjoyable weeks in this cottage. It is small , but very convenient for the two us us. The accommodation was clean, with a bright spacious lounge and good kitchen, equipped with all we needed. Everything worked as intended. The area was new to us but we found it easy to get around and saw lots of nice country and all the tourist stuff we wanted. It was very quiet but there are convenient shops, markets and wine outlets. the garden is smaller than some, but is sunny and well laid out. We did not meet the owners but spoke to them by phone and e-mail and found them attentive, helpful and friendly. The only, minor negative is the welcome pack, which needs updating to reflect some changes (trains no longer run past the railway cottage). We would thoroughly recommend this property.

Peaceful and relaxed holiday cottage and location

We had a lovely week at The Railway Cottage. It is well equipped and has plenty of character. The cottage is located a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk from Esperaza which has plenty of facilities including a good small supermarket, a few boulangerie and cafes. The Sunday market was worth a visit for fresh provisions and Intermarche is very close. And try the Malbec from Anne de Joyeuse, delicious. It was very peaceful relaxing on the terrace, listening to the birds and spotting the very infrequent trains. The garden is crying out for a pool but that may be a consideration for the future. There is a good circular walk up Chemin de Brimort if you like to get in a bit of a daily walk and there are possibilities for longer ones. The whole area is beautiful and changes as you head south towards the mountains. There is plenty to do in the area locally or a little further afield. If you have kids definitely visit the Dinosaur Musee as it is much bigger and more impressive than expected. A most enjoyable stay and relaxed place to be.

Thanks for your positive review, Helen. We're delighted that you had a great experience in the lovely region. You're right that a pool is our next major project, but the lack of a pool does mean that we can keep the rental prices down, so it does have its advantages! In the meantime, there are plenty of freshwater lakes nearby that are ideal for swimming - such as Puivert, Bucharach and Arques. All best wishes, Ben and Fabien

Gorgeous cottage in a great location

Stayed at this cottage for 1 week. Before arriving the owners sent an information pack which was incredibly useful and meant when we arrived at the cottage we could settle in easily and comfortably. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean - each room felt warm and comforting. The location of the cottage was great as it was in a more secluded area (very peaceful) but within walking distance of bars, resturants and shops. Within the cottage was an info pack which contained leaflets of things to do within the surrounding areas which meant that each day we were spoiled for choice with activities! One evening we were slightly cold so asked the owners about heating and the next day the property maneger had put radiators within the bedrooms! Great location, lovely owners, warm and welcoming property- would definitely recommend any of my friends to stay here!

Magical Area

I spent a lovely week here with a friend in June/July, and we have both been itching to go back ever since. What you cannot see from the photographs is the wonderful view of Rennes le Chateau, that sits on top of the distant foothills. The garden is not overlooked, so you will not be disturbed while you sip your wine and enjoy the scenery. And talking of wine, there is a brilliant winery just 10 minutes walk up the road, Anne le Joyeuse, where Rose and Red can be bought at bargain prices by the litre. Even without a car it was fine to get around using the 1 Euro train or Bus that takes you up and down the Aude Valley. The cottage is cool in the height of summer, and has a well stocked kitchen, with everything that you can possibly need. Would happily recommend it to anyone wanting to explore this magical region.

Delightful, comfortable cottage in beautiful area

Lovely, comfortable cottage located in a beautiful part of France. The cottage has everything required for an enjoyable stay. The garden is large and well equipped with dining table, chairs, sun loungers and BBQ and several fruit trees. We had many meals al fresco and enjoyed the garden hugely. It is fully enclosed so therefore ideal for children. The region is beautiful, with some lovely historic towns and villages within driving distance and fantastic lake and many rivers in which you are able to swim. Highly recommended.

Having lived in France for years and travelled all over the country, we personally fell in love with this region a few years ago, essentially because it is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of France and offers a haven of peace from mass tourism even during the busy summer months. We adore the stunning mountain views, the historic Cathar castles, the unrivalled food and wine, the access to mountain lakes, and the bustling village markets, not to mention the ability to day-trip to great cities like Carcassonne, Béziers, Toulouse, Perpignan and Montpellier, and to the world-class beaches on the south-west coast. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft

We fell in love with the rustic French charm of this rare railway cottage, but also with its huge, 1/2 acre garden which offers incredible views up to hilltop villages and over the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is a haven of peace but also within easy walking distance of Couiza's and Espéraza's shops, markets, bars and restaurants.
