Phenomenal 1-bedroom bungalow in charming Old Lyme
A Private Cottage Retreat in Historic Old Lyme
Enjoy the quiet beauty of the Connecticut shoreline from this charming, completely independent guest cottage in historic Old Lyme. Tucked discreetly on the grounds of a distinguished 1840s property, the cottage offers privacy, comfort, and a peaceful setting—while placing you close to the beaches of Long Island Sound, Old Lyme’s celebrated arts community, restaurants, jazz, nature, and the many attractions of southeastern Connecticut.
The cottage has its own private entrance, dedicated parking space immediately adjacent to the building, and an outdoor electric-vehicle charging station for guests arriving by EV. Once you arrive, the cottage is entirely your own.
Step inside and you are welcomed by an unexpectedly spacious interior with high ceilings, comfortable furnishings, and an open, airy feeling. Although intimate in scale, the cottage has been thoughtfully arranged to provide everything needed for a relaxing coastal stay. It is well suited to a couple seeking privacy, a quiet weekend away, a visit to family or friends in the area, or a convenient home base for exploring the Connecticut shoreline.
One of the cottage’s most appealing features is its attached outdoor pergola. Sheltered by mature landscaping and screened from the main residence, this private outdoor space feels like an additional room. It is a lovely place for morning coffee, reading in the afternoon, sharing a quiet meal, or enjoying the evening air after a day at the beach or exploring the surrounding towns.
The cottage includes a comfortable living and sleeping area, a private bathroom, and a convenient kitchenette for preparing coffee, breakfast, snacks, and simple meals. The interior has been designed to feel welcoming and residential rather than like an ordinary hotel room. The cottage and pergola together provide a secluded retreat where guests can settle in, relax, and enjoy their own schedule.
Historic Old Lyme and the Connecticut Shoreline
Old Lyme is one of New England’s most beautiful and historic shoreline communities. Known for its tree-lined roads, historic homes, galleries, museums, and connection to American Impressionism, the town has long attracted painters, writers, musicians, and visitors drawn to its distinctive combination of culture and natural beauty.
The cottage is conveniently located near Old Lyme’s historic village center and the Lyme Street arts district. Visitors can explore the Florence Griswold Museum and its beautiful riverside grounds, visit the Lyme Art Association, attend local exhibitions and programs, and discover the artistic traditions that have made Old Lyme an important part of American cultural history.
Music lovers can enjoy performances at the nearby jazz club, while those who prefer a quiet day outdoors can explore local nature preserves, shoreline walks, rivers, beaches, and scenic country roads.
White Sand Beach and the waters of Long Island Sound are nearby, making the cottage an inviting destination for a coastal visit. Beach access and seasonal parking regulations vary by location, so guests should review the applicable town or beach rules when planning their visit.
Old Lyme also provides an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Connecticut shoreline. Nearby destinations include Old Saybrook, Essex, Chester, East Lyme, Niantic, Mystic, and the lower Connecticut River Valley. Guests can enjoy waterfront dining, antique shops, galleries, historic villages, boat excursions, theaters, state parks, and some of the most attractive scenery in southern New England.
Privacy Without Isolation
The cottage is located on the grounds of the owners’ residence, but it is positioned and landscaped to provide a high degree of independence and privacy. Guests have their own entrance, their own parking space, and their own outdoor pergola. There are no shared interior spaces.
The owners are nearby should assistance be required, but otherwise guests are free to enjoy the property privately. This arrangement offers the reassuring convenience of having attentive hosts close at hand without sacrificing the independence that makes a cottage stay special.

Über den Gastgeber
Zu Gast bei Jerry & Kathleen Reed
Kathleen is the heart of our home and the person whose warmth, good taste, and attention to detail a reflected throughout the bungalow. She has taken particular care and choosing the furnishings, bedding, towels, and finishing touches. It helped make the space comfortable, welcoming, and attractive. Professional life has been devoted to healthcare, and she brings that same sense of care, responsibility, and thoughtfulness to the way we receive guests. She wants people to feel that the bungalow has been prepared, especially for them personally – not merely made available. I have focused much of my energy on restoring, improving, and caring for our historic property, excuse me. I enjoy solving practical problems, preserving the character of older buildings, and making certain that everything works as it should. Together, Kathleen and I have tried to create accommodations that combine, comfort, privacy, history, and a genuine sense of hospitality. We have lived in Old Lyme for many years and value. Its peaceful atmosphere, artistic heritage, historic homes, Shoreline, setting, and strong sense of place. Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft
Our bungalow is located in Old Lyme‘s Historic District, a peaceful neighborhood of mature trees, old homes, Stone walls, gardens, and quiet roads that reflect the character of a traditional New England village. Ferry Road has a gracious established feeling with homes set among lawns and plantings rather than crowded together what we enjoy most is a sense of calm and privacy. Although interstate 95 and Shore Road provide convenient access, the neighborhood itself feels pleasantly removed from traffic and commercial activity. Guest can return from the beach, a day of sightseeing, or a dinner nearby and immediately feel that they have entered a quieter setting the area is especially attractive in the early morning and evening when light filters through the trees and the neighborhood is at its most peaceful. It’s common to hear, birds, see deer, moving through the area, and enjoying the changing colors and textures of the surrounding gardens and Landscape. Old Lyme is known for its history, its connection with American impressionist art which was begun in Old Lyme and the villages location near the Connecticut river and Long Island sound. The Old Lyme is known for its history, it’s connection with American impressionist art which was begun in Old Lyme and the villages location near the Connecticut river and Long Island Sound. The Florence Griswold Museum, Lyme Art Association, local Galleries, beaches, marinas, and seasonal cultural events are all within an easy reach. For us, the greatest pleasure is the balance: the bungalow feels private and secluded, yet it is close to the beaches, restaurants, museums, village, attractions, and the main routes for exploring the Connecticut Shoreline. It is a place where Guest can slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and experience the quiet beauty of historic coastal New England.
Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig
Our property is part of a larger historic estate that was once that once extended from Ferry Road to Academy Lane, and from the Lieutenant River to Lyme Street. Overtime, portions of the original estate were divided into neighboring properties, but several of the historic structures remain visible throughout the area. Among them is an original three bay carriage barn. Among them is an original three-bay carriage barn now located on our neighboring property and thoughtfully converted into a private residence. These surviving buildings helped to preserve the story of what was once a substantial and self contained New England estate. Our own property retain three distinctive structures: the original 1840 residence, a separate barn and the bungalow now used for guest accommodations. Together, they create the feeling of a small historic compound rather than a conventional modern property. The bungalow offers guest privacy and independence, while retaining connection to the character in history of the larger estate. Mature trees, established gardens, old buildings, and the historic surrounding neighborhood give the property a sense of permanence and authenticity that cannot easily be recreated. What makes this property, especially unique is this combination of history, privacy, and continued use. Guests are not simply staying in a separate accommodation; they are staying within part of a surviving 19th century estate in the heart of historic Old Lyme.
