I was part of a party of 7 that rented all three rooms from Pablo and Julia. We were pleased that they were able to put a roll-away in one of the rooms for us. This allowed us to be comfortable with the bed arrangements.
As part of the stay we were served breakfast daily. We had many choices and it was great way to start each morning.
Two of the rooms, 1and 2, have been remodeled with wonderful new spacious bathrooms. The third room, number 3, has not, which caused an issue with the bathroom. It has a tub-shower but it is very precarious and felt unsafe as there were no hand bars. The toilet had no lid and the septic smell permeated the room at times. The owners are aware of the problem and hopefully this will be their next project.
The apartments are located in the heart of the town and made it so easy to get out and see everything there was to see. The train station is at the end of the street and affords easy access to the other towns in Cinque Terra.
The Internet issues were not yet resolved but we were given a modem for our room, but it had to be taken from room to room for access.
I would give rooms 1 and 2 a good rating and room 3 average.
We loved our stay in Vernazza and plan to visit again.
I brought a group of 3 Americans to Vernazza, and we were able to rent the three rooms from Julia and Paolo. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. Two of the rooms were without heat when we arrived, but Paolo quickly fixed the problem. There was a problem with the internet, but Paolo gave us a portable modem to use in the rooms since two of us were working while on vacation. (Grazie mille!)
I found Paolo and Julia to be extremely pleasant and easy to work with, and should I have the opportunity to visit Vernazza again, I will definitely book the rooms.
I do want to point out that there are 50+ steps up to the rooms, which is not unusual. That said, they are VERY steep, so beware if you have problems climbing steps.
Our family of 4 (22 & 24 yr old kids) stayed in 2 rooms & had a great stay here. Paolo is very helpful & friendly; my husband & I stayed in the larger room that faced the street. I'm a pretty light sleeper, and didn't get much sleep due to the noise of many who'd had too much to drink that were walking up the street. Great location though, and had the best anchovy casserole (Vernazza's known for this dish) at their restaurant. We were served an omelette the 1st breakfast, and only focaccia for the 2nd breakfast. As they're closed on Tuesday, we were served breakfast at the next-door restaurant and had a nice buffet (although very limited). I'd give this place a 5-star, but was disappointed the wifi didn't work in the rooms, and only worked at the restaurant if it was enabled (you could ask for it to be turned on, but if this is the case, it shouldn't be advertised as available). Overall, good value for the money but next time we'll stay in Monterosso.
I stayed at this Vernazza property in June 2014 with my wife and teen-age daughter. It is owned by Paulo and Barbara, who also have two other similar rooms on VRBO, and also a bar / restaurant down in the main square of the town. (Don't be confused by the listing -- they actually have 3 separate one-bedroom apartments / hotel rooms.) Their hospitality was wonderful. They gave us breakfast every morning. We also used their restaurant for a dinner once and for relaxing with a drink or snack other times. We felt like part of their busy family.
Our room was on the third or fourth floor of the building, so like all the rooms in Cinque Terre, there were lots of stairs to climb! We had a tiny balcony (that wasn't very scenic) and a great loft that my daughter enjoyed very, very much for having her own private space. Because of the loft, the room was definitely large enough for us.
Cinque Terre is still recovering from the rain and mudslides of a year or two ago. We didn't actually see any damage or reconstruction, but it did interfere with hiking among the 5 villages. The official tourist office told us that the trail was ONLY open between Vernazza and Monterosa -- the rest was closed they said. So that's the only part we walked, and it was very crowded! We eventually found out that the trail was actually open between 4 of the 5 villages. It seems that the official tourist office could be much more forthcoming with correct information -- I know we would have enjoyed walking to and hanging out in two more villages.
My husband and I and our 21-year-old son enjoyed what turned out to be a one-night stay in the third floor room at the Basso’s flat. The photos accurately depict the rental, which is a spacious room with a loft. We had planned to stay two nights, but departed early due to a train strike that would have stranded us on the Cinque Terre when we needed to be elsewhere. Paolo and his family made us feel very welcome, and did not press us to remain for our second night, even though we would have liked to stay for our full reservation. We had one of the best meals our two-week Italian vacation at the family’s Taverna del Capitano restaurant (however, breakfast was focaccia, not an omelette as the VRBO information states). We happily accepted Paolo’s invitation to store our luggage in the restaurant while hiking and before our departure from the area. We would return to stay with the Bassos in Vernazza without hesitation!
This was one of our favorite stops in Italy. The family was so welcoming and available, checking in with us several times during our stay. We are a family of four with two teens and although they did not have two rooms for us, they let us all squeeze into one. Very snug but it worked. We had a large bed and two cots in the one room with an attached bathroom. The room was basic, without a TV or coffee maker etc, but overloaded with charm. I thought it was perfect.
Breakfast was outside in the plaza by the ocean. The setting was lovely although we were only offered focaccia or a croissant and coffee, we like more food in the morning. The only potential negative was the long flight of stairs up to the room which may be a concern for some although we didn't mind.
The charm and authenticity of this town, building, coast can not be overstated. Just a delightful stay!
