Who Will Love Fisher's Perch and St John?
Travelers who value wild beauty over butler service, starry skies over casinos and overbuilt areas and authentic community over packaged experiences. If that’s you, you’ll find the real St. John here, you will fall in love and you will return again and again.
The REAL St. John Experience. Laid-back sunsets and quiet mornings. Looking for a cozy, no-fuss island getaway where you can truly unwind? This could be your home base for an easygoing, laid-back St. John adventure. Located in the peaceful Fish Bay area, this charming cottage offers a simple, relaxed space to recharge, whether you’re here for a few days or a long, relaxing getaway.
What You’ll Love About Fisher’s Perch:
Two Private Living Spaces – Fisher’s Perch is perfect for families, friends, or couples who want privacy but still enjoy time together. This down-to-earth cottage has two separate suites, each with its own kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and deck—ideal for small groups.
Stunning Views, Laid-Back Vibes – Start your day with a cup of coffee on the deck, soaking in the peaceful views of Fish Bay. Watch the sugar bird in the morning and relax under the stars at night. This is true island living, simple, no fuss and beautiful.
Outdoor Movie Nights – Want to watch a movie under the stars? We’ve got an outdoor movie setup right on the deck! Pop some popcorn and enjoy a relaxed evening in paradise.
Easy Access to Cruz Bay – Only a 12-minute drive to Cruz Bay’s restaurants, shops, and Northshore Rd to beaches, this location gives you the best of both worlds. Seclusion and tranquility, but close enough to easily enjoy St. John’s top spots.
Affordable Island Life – Fisher’s Perch isn’t a bustling luxury resort, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. You’ll find everything you need for a comfortable stay—two kitchens, Wi-Fi, air conditioning in the bedrooms, and even a washer/dryer for longer stays. All the comforts of home without the high-end prices.
The REAL St. John Experience
This isn’t about fancy resorts or crowded tourist spots. It’s about simple, affordable island living. The cottage was a labor of love. Built by our father in 1987 and we have opened it up so that others can enjoy its island charm. Whether you're hanging out on the deck, cooking a meal together, or just enjoying the slow pace of island life, Fisher’s Perch is your perfect home away from home.
We can’t wait to welcome you to Fisher’s Perch Cottage—a true island hideaway where relaxation comes easily and the views are unforgettable.
Traveling to St. John, USVI? —

St. John is unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. Wild, resilient, and deeply rooted in its history, the island rewards travelers who come with open eyes and open hearts. Before you arrive, here’s what you need to know.
What St. John *is*
Roughly two-thirds of the island is Virgin Islands National Park. That means pristine beaches, hiking trails, ancient petroglyphs, sugar mill ruins, and reefs alive with turtles and fish. Life here is small-scale, nature-first, and deliberately unpolished.
What St. John *isn't*
It’s not an all-inclusive resort island, and it won’t feel like Cozumel or Turks & Caicos. Nightlife is low-key, infrastructure is simple, and “island time” is a real thing. Service is friendly but unhurried, and a warm greeting (“Good morning,” “Good afternoon”, “Good night”) goes a very long way.
Getting Here & Around
You’ll fly into St. Thomas and connect by passenger ferry to Cruz Bay (~30 minutes). If you rent a car on St Thomas, car barges cross from Red Hook. You can also get a taxi from the airport to take you to Red Hook for the people ferry to St John. Driving is on the LEFT, and roads are steep and winding—slow and steady wins here. There’s no Uber or Lyft, so plan on taxis or renting wheels. Take it easy and don’t get in a hurry and you will enjoy things much more.
Creature Comforts & Realities
Most homes collect rainwater in cisterns: please conserve water, always.
Power outages happen: solar + battery or generators are common backups.
Groceries are expensive: everything is shipped in, so make sure to budget accordingly..
Donkeys, goats, cows, and chickens roam freely so this is another reason to drive slowly—this is part of daily island life.
Ocean Etiquette
St. John’s reefs are fragile. Reef-safe sunscreen (zinc or titanium only) is required by law. Never stand on coral or touch marine life. Float, snorkel, and admire—without harm.
History You Can Feel
The island carries deep history: Taino petroglyphs, Danish colonial remnants, and the 1733 slave revolt—one of the earliest in the Caribbean. Explore ruins and trails to engage respectfully with the past. It is worth a visit to learn more at the National Park Tourist Center located in Cruz Bay by the National Park dock.
Resilience & Hurricanes
Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 devastated the island, but the community rebuilt trail by trail, dock by dock and are still building back even today.
Locals remain resourceful and strong—visitors who show patience, respect, and care fit right in.
The Vibe—Good, Bad, and Honest
Good: world-class beaches, uncrowded trails, warm community, starry skies.
Challenging: steep roads, tight parking, power or wifi outages can occur, grocery costs should be factored into your budget, slower pace (this is not necessarily a bad thing). :)
Non-negotiables: greet kindly, conserve water and power, protect reefs, respect wildlife.
St John is for those who appreciate nature, history and a genuine adventure. You'll come once and you'll come back again and again.

Our father built this home for our family when we were small children. We've enjoyed coming here to vacation for all our lives! Now, we would like to share our love of this beautiful hillside cottage with you. We would love to have you as our guests at Fisher's Perch Fish Bay!
Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft
Built in 1987 as a labor of love by our father, this home is full of love, memories and most of all, island charm. Only 12 minutes from Cruz Bay and easy to get to on totally paved roads, but private and tucked away on the Fish Bay hillside.
Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig
Just far enough away from the hustle and bustle, easy to get to, yet tucked away as an amazing island retreat. You're new home away from home.
