Stichwort: Casita in Abiquiu, New Mexico
As a British family, that has now spent several long summers visiting America, we try always to stay in rental homes rather than in hotels. We were always a little unsure of what the frequently-used word 'awesome' meant, but now we know. This house, perched on a bluff, overlooking Lake Abiquiu, with panoramic views, truly inspires 'awe'! In the evenings we were treated to lightning shows on several sides of the mountains circling us; every night we gazed at the stars, it could not have been more blissful.
It is a cosy house, cleverly but perfectly designed in a circle, with very comfortable amenities. If its privacy you want, look no further, and although another reviewer suggested stocking up on food before you arrive, we travelled about most days, and found the small shop in Abiquiu on the way home had plenty to suffice. Even the mile or two of un-tarred road leading up to the house wasn't a problem for us.
The owners were incredibly helpful before we arrived, and we are so grateful for all the communication with great tips and hints. We had a marvellous horseriding trek at Ghost Ranch, and on our way back from the amazing water pools at Ojo Caliente, pulled off the
road to watch a spectacular thunder storm with the biggest hailstones we have ever seen. As the sun glints off the lake and the colourful rocks around it, the view from the house could tranfix us for hours in the evenings!
We stayed at this house as a little piece of luxury before heading to the Sangre de Christo mountains as volunteers at the Philmont Scout Camp, and as geologists we would have happily spent many more days enjoying the beautiful scenery and bountiful rocks around Abiquiu. We would love to be able to come back here again one day!
WOW!! What a special place Vista de Lago is! We have visited the Abiquiu area several times over the past 10 years, but had always stayed in Santa Fe. We decided this trip needed to be different...a bit more remote, somewhere we could reconnect with the beauty of northern New Mexico. We hit the jackpot! Although the road in was a bit bumpy, the journey was worth it. We actually had trouble unpacking the car because we kept getting distracted by one view after another. The house was the cleanest we have ever rented, and well-stocked and well-appointed. We had a laundry list of places we wanted to visit and things to do, but after the first 48 hours found it difficult to leave the mesa. Larry and Laurie gave great restaurant recommendations-we loved El Bruno's and El Paragua. If you are looking for a place to leave the world as you know it behind, bask in the beauty of those gorgeous mountains and reconnect with each other, this is the place for you. But you better hurry up before we beat you to it!
Our first visit to Vista De Lago. The first time that we drove out there on the gravel roads (about 4 miles), we were really grateful that Larry had supplied detailed directions. It seemed like a long distance. But, each time traveling it, the road seemed shorter. Our first reaction on arriving at the house was WOW. The house was wonderful. The views are really beyond description. We stayed two nights, soaking in the sunsets that reflected off the red rocks of Ghost Ranch. But, here was the best part - the silence. Each of the two mornings, I sat on a rock overlooking the plain for about an hour each day. The first morning I heard (1) a car on the gravel road and (2) a few airplanes high above, and (3) hummingbirds, and more non-human sounds that we rarely hear. On the second morning, the only human sounds made were those of a few airplanes way, way overhead. For an hour. My breath slowed. My perspective broadened and deepened. Thanks to Larry and Laurie for opening their lake/Ghost Ranch house and view to we who visit from other parts.
This was our second visit to Abiquiu and Our second stay at Vista de Lago. The morning hikes are extremely peaceful, thr views from the Mesa are breathtaking, and the time that we spent there will always be cherished.
In a world that seems to spin faster and faster everyday this is a perfect retreat. My wife and I used our time there to disconnect from everything and to reconnect with each other. We prepared all of our meals there and thoroughly enjoyed the house and the surrounding area. It is absolutely incredible. We have told everyone we know about this place and can't wait to go back again. This place is magical.
Our family's thanks to Larry for outstanding responses to booking procedures; questions and arrival information. His responses were immediate and gracious. The arrival and property information were well-thought and communicated clearly. We felt as if we were family guests invited for a visit....the family pictures inside made us feel as if they had just stepped away for a few moments and might be right back. Having a local contact was reassuring even though we did not need it.
Other VRBO properties could use his procedures as a model.
Had we just camped out on the portales and looked at the view, we would still have felt the journey up to the property and the rental fees were worth it.
The view is unforgettable; the casita thoughtfully appointed.
I queried my family as to their top 3 favorite experiences from our journey from ALBQ Sunport throughout northern New Mexico and we covered a lot of ground. They are:
Meow Wolf in Santa Fe; Vista de Lago; Sanctuario de Chimayo - 18 yr old
Meow Wolf; Vista de Lago; Ojo Calientes - 26yr old
Meow Wolf, Vista de Lago; Taos Pueblo - 46 yr old
Unfortunately, the casita was available for only 3 days of our visit, but obviously was a memorable experience ranking with top tourist attractions! So if you are considering this property, book when you see it!
A recommendation - stop by a supermarket and bring all your food supplies; Bodes General store is good for a fill-in trip for milk, etc.
We would love to visit again!
One of the most beautiful places on this earth. The casita is in absolutly perfect condition. Very comfortable, well appointed, yet not stuffy. We stayed three nights, and had planned all sorts of touristy adventures. Did none of them! The furthest we went was five minutes away for a swim. I can't say enough about this home, and it's owners. So helpful. And the price was more than right. Later on the trip, we stupidly paid twice the price, for another casita in Taos. No comparison, not even close. Thanks Larry.
