Circe und Hare Log Cabin in Vermont

We’re Leslie & Matt, and we share a deep love for Vermont—its vastness, mountains, changing seasons, small towns and independent spirit. We’re drawn to places with character, to things made by hand, and to the wonderfully creative people who call this state home.

Leslie has worked professionally with gardens for more than 20 years, and much of her time is spent outdoors tending the gardens and landscape surrounding the cabin, as well as caring for her small homestead. She also loves art, cooking, good food and creating beautiful, welcoming spaces.

Matt is a musical-instrument maker with a lifelong appreciation for craftsmanship, architecture, furniture, music and design. His work and interests are rooted in many of the same things that drew us to this cabin: natural materials, history, character and the beauty of things thoughtfully made.

Together, we renovated and furnished Circe & Hare ourselves, and the cabin reflects many of the things we value in our own lives—comfort, art, nature, craftsmanship and a sense of place. We continue to personally care for the house, gardens and property, and after many years of hosting, we still genuinely enjoy sharing this little corner of Vermont with people who appreciate it.

We live nearby and are always happy to share favorite hikes, swimming spots, local food, galleries, shops and other places we love, or help guests put together a stay that suits the way they like to travel.

There’s something about Greensboro and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom that’s difficult to put into words. We were drawn here by the vastness of the landscape—the mountains, lakes, forests, working farms and miles of beautiful back roads—but over time we realized it was just as much about the character of the place and the people who call it home.

Greensboro is small and wonderfully rural, yet there’s an extraordinary amount of creativity tucked into these hills. Artists, farmers, craftspeople, musicians and makers are very much part of the fabric of the community. There are farm stands and swimming holes, galleries and trails, local food, beautiful lakes and, just two miles from the cabin, Hill Farmstead Brewery.

We love that you can spend a day hiking in the mountains, swimming or paddling on a lake, wandering through a small town or following a back road simply to see where it goes—and then return to a place where the night is truly dark and the woods become quiet.

The seasons are a large part of why we love it here, too. Summer is lush and green, autumn can be spectacular, winter transforms the landscape entirely, and spring brings everything slowly back to life.

But what we love most is harder to describe. Greensboro has a sense of place that feels increasingly rare. It’s beautiful without feeling polished for visitors, creative without being self-conscious, and peaceful without feeling empty. If you find yourself here, you may not be able to put your finger on exactly what makes it so special—but chances are, you’ll feel it.

Circe & Hare is a hand-built log cabin tucked into five private acres in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, surrounded by gardens, meadow, woods & the Lamoille River. It combines the character of a true Vermont cabin with a home that feels collected, comfortable & personal.

At its heart is a soaring two-story Rumford fireplace, made for evenings by the fire with a glass of wine, a good book or nowhere else to be. Throughout the cabin are original art, antiques, beautiful rugs, vintage pieces & rich textiles gathered over time. We renovated & furnished the cabin ourselves, never to create a typical rental, but simply a place we loved being in.

Outside, years-in-the-making gardens give way to meadow & woods. Paths wander to the Lamoille River, where Adirondack chairs wait beside the water. There’s a firepit beneath the trees, a covered year-round hot tub under bistro lights & in warmer months, a hanging porch bed that may be one of the hardest places to leave.

The privacy here is increasingly difficult to find. Nights are dark, the stars extraordinary & the Milky Way sometimes visible overhead. Yet tucked into this rural corner of Vermont are places known far beyond it: world-renowned Hill Farmstead Brewery is just two miles away & the acclaimed cheesemakers at Jasper Hill Farm are minutes from the cabin.

The kitchen is stocked for people who genuinely enjoy cooking, the beds dressed in rich, comfortable linens & the house filled with thoughtful details. Dogs are welcome, too. We know how much better a getaway can be when your pup comes along—with woods to explore, trails to wander & plenty of good smells.

Circe & Hare has become a place for proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays & long-awaited weekends away. Others return simply because they’ve found a place that feels good to be in.
