Sehr gute Lage, sehr schöne Wohnung: groß, gemütlich, sauber, sehr nette
Lovely secluded cottage
Very relaxing stay, cream tea on arrival was lovely, everything you need for a holiday in Cornwall
Thank you for your review, so pleased your stay at the cottage was a success, it is a great place to unwind.
Perfect location for Deloitte Ride Across Britain
Lovely, comfortable & cosy cottage sat in beautiful gardens, with private outside sitting area. Warm welcome from hosts plus scones, cream & jam, very much appreciated. Secluded in the country, but close to Penzance & Lands End, perfect for us as close to start of The Deloitte Ride Across Britain. Very peaceful & relaxing, cottage very well equipped, great attention to detail. Would highly recommend, would definitely return.
Thank you for your review Felicity, we're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. It was great meeting you and we hope the cycling and your journey the length of Britain went well!
Beautiful wee cottage in lovely surroundings
We had a delightful few days in the cottage, in a peaceful and tranquil setting. Great situation for using as a base for visiting other parts of West Cornwall, however a car is essential.
So glad you enjoyed your stay in the cottage and had a such good time exploring, we are ideally situated for that.
We have camped in West Cornwall for years but we decided that our summer holiday should be more special this year and so we booked this cottage. Our arrival was later than we had hoped due to hours of torrential rain. Following the instructions, we found that the gravel drive was in fact a farm track, awash with mud, and very narrow; finding the property was almost impossible as there was no sign on the easy to miss gateway. It was only by driving onto the property (after turning round in the narrow lane) and walking into the garden that we could recognise the cottage from the photos. We had begun carrying luggage through the garden before the owner appeared: he made what proved to be an empty offer of help and asked us to move our car into a corner of the small parking area. Then he shut the door as I asked if he might help us, given the torrential rain.
Our hearts sank when we entered the cottage. To be frank it felt like a charity shop, with its peeling, inappropriate armchair and broken lampshade. It was colour co-ordinated and the art work was lovely but that is not a priority: it was in the main cheap and shabby. The kitchen units were unpainted board, with greasy finger mark stains and recycled handles. Many of the kitchen items needed washing up before use: old food in the sieve, stained cups and dirty plates, clearly unchecked. However, the sofa was comfortable and the cream tea was welcome.
The bedroom furniture was basic and the bed the most uncomfortable we have ever had to sleep in. It was so firm that even with a spare quilt placed under the bottom sheet we had to ask for more layers. It took several layers of quilt and a mattress topper for our backs to recover. The bathroom was pleasant, modern and clean.
The worst feature was the onslaught of stable flies, which we had never encountered before, even with camping for over 20 years on a dairy farm. Being in the cottage or garden was unbearable as they attacked constantly in the quest to suck blood from our legs. This explained the flypapers hanging in the property. We asked the owner if they had any fly spray or swats to help protect ourselves, but the reply was unsympathetic, this is 'just living in the country.' In addition to the bites, the constant cleaning up of fly dirts, which appeared on our sheets, washing on the airer and anything light coloured was horrible. We bought some fly swats, but it felt like a losing battle.
We left a day early, very disappointed.
Thank you for your feedback, it’s clear a stay at Chyenhal Garden Cottage wasn’t the right choice for you. We’re sorry you feel that way but also surprised because, as you can see from the many reviews, this is certainly not the experience of our other guests.
Guests may arrive tired, sometimes after long journeys, so we provide very clear directions and make a point of being here to welcome them. We try to be helpful at all times and, understanding that you found the bed too firm, we promptly provided a second foam topper. When you told us you were bothered by insects and had also encountered them during a cream tea at a nearby National Trust property, we supplied extra fly papers. We understood that you left a day early due to a personal family matter.
However we always pay attention to feedback from our guests and in the light of your comments we have replaced the damaged lampshade and thoroughly rechecked everything in the let in order to satisfy ourselves that all is as it should be. We think the cottage and this location are very special and want our guests to enjoy their stay to the full; twenty eight 5 star reviews, year on year Premier Partner awards and all the lovely comments in our guest book suggest we are succeeding.
