Region: From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain’s best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Town: Nestling in the hills of the Forest of Alyth and just south of the Cairngorms National Park, Alyth can trace its history back to the 12th century and perhaps even earlier given the remains of a vitrified fort on nearby Barry Hill. Local legend has it that King Arthur’s Queen Guinevere was a prisoner here of the Pictish King Mordred. Alyth developed throughout the 19th century both due to its textiles industry and the coming of the railway. Always a popular tourist destination due to its location and the founding of a golf course at the end of the 19th century with the original 9 hole course designed by Old Tom Morris from St Andrews and extended to 18 holes in 1934,with a further two clubs added in the area. The town today has an array of shops, bars and cafés. It is close to Blairgowrie, Kirriemuir and Dunkeld and the coast at Arbroath is easily reachable. Ideal for exploring the great outdoors, Alyth is ideal for walkers, cyclists, golfers and anglers as well as skiers.
