Edgerton cottage, 1-bed detached coach house in town, Spacious rustic charm.
Bankfield Coach House is a spacious one-bedroom self-catering cottage in the Edgerton conservation area of Huddersfield, with free private gated parking, fast Wi-Fi, fully equipped workspace, and generous living areas. It provides a peaceful and private base for couples, business travelers, contractors, hospital visitors, University of Huddersfield guests, visiting academics or short-term students. It offers space, comfort, charm and convenience in equal measure for short or long stays.
THE SPACE
Carefully converted in 2011 from an 1864 Victorian coach house and stable with hay loft, the cottage combines historic character with modern comfort.
• Sitting Room. Originally the stable, you can now relax in the reclining sofa or leather slipper chair to watch the 43” TV (live and internet channels) in this characterful room. A 2-seater ottoman provides additional occasional seating.
• Kitchen-diner. The former coach room is now a fully equipped kitchen with generous dining area, comfortably sitting 4 people if you have a couple of daytime guests, extending to 6 if required.
• Dedicated workspace designed for remote work. On the mezzanine gallery overlooking the kitchen-diner, you will find a computer desk and office chair, monitor and printer, multi-port USB-C hub for your laptop, multi-powerpoint column with USB ports and wireless charger, US and French socket adapters. Fast broadband: Virgin Media 132 Mbps average speed.
• Bedroom. Super-king bed (180 x 200 cm). Direct, level, access to the bathroom. 2nd TV with internet TV through a Roku stick (no live TV). Blu-ray/DVD player.
• Bathroom. Shower-bath (full length bath widening into shower area with integral screen). Washbasin and toilet. Direct, level, access from bedroom; separate 2-step access from landing/gallery.
• Understairs boiler room. Storage space, housekeeping and supplementary equipment.
• Outdoor Space. Cobbled courtyard gated at the top of the driveway, including your private parking space. Folding table available for use outside with kitchen chairs. Courtyard planting with herbs, flowers and greenery. The courtyard is shared with the owners, who use it only occasionally.
GUEST ACCESS
The coach house is detached, entirely self-contained, and independent of the main house.
• Personal welcome of guests by owner with rapid practical walkthrough of the property whenever possible.
• Key safe available for self-check-in if required.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
The location is the Conservation area of Edgerton, with its numerous 19th century listed buildings. The coach house cottage is at the back of one of these with great character. It is surrounded by other such houses and coach houses converted into dwellings, but entirely detached.
Set back from the A629, Edgerton Cottage is surprisingly quiet while remaining close to major routes, offering excellent access to Huddersfield amenities and West Yorkshire key destinations.
GETTING AROUND
WITH A CAR, Huddersfield town centre is 5 minutes away, Huddersfield Royal Hospital 5, the University 10.
WITHOUT A CAR, the X1 bus (Huddersfield- Halifax) passes by the main house. The nearest stop is about 50 metres away. The trip to Huddersfield bus station takes roughly 6 minutes.
ON FOOT, the town centre is 15 to 20 minutes away, Huddersfield train and bus stations 15, the University 20 to 25, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (hospital) 20, Greenhead Park 10 (with outdoor tennis, bowling, and other facilities). For guests attending events at the Ukrainian Club, the entrance is just 100 yards across the road.
Many attractions are within easy reach: Shibden Hall (home of Anne Lister, of Gentleman Jack’s fame), Bankfield Museum and Dean Clough Mills in Halifax; Yorkshire Sculpture Park and National Coal Mining Museum between Huddersfield and Wakefield; Salts Mills in Saltaire, and the Brontë Parsonage, home of the Brontë sisters, in Haworth.
Golf amateurs will find half a dozen golf courses within 10 to 15 minutes’ drive, and close to 20 courses within 30 minutes.
Distances:
• Huddersfield town centre, railway and bus stations, hospital (Huddersfield Royal Infirmary - HRI) – 1 mile
• University of Huddersfield – 1.2 miles
• M62 motorway – 2 miles
• Halifax – 8 miles – 25 minutes by car – 40 minutes by bus
• Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, between 14 and 20 miles – 30 to 45 minutes by car – 20 to 45 minutes by public transport (bus or train)
• Manchester – 28 miles – 40 to 60 minutes by car – 50 minutes by train
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
• Prompt responses to messages.
• Assistance available at most times if needed.
• Courtesy text a day or two after arrival to check all OK.
• Housekeeping communications during longer stays.
• Otherwise minimal host interaction unless requested.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
• Long stay discounts: 15% for 7 nights or more. 30% for 28 nights or more.
• 4.99 score on Airbnb with 73 reviews. SuperHost and Guest Favourite.
• A Ring video-doorbell on the back door of the main house and an outdoor camera overlook the courtyard. They are meant to record movement outside for security purposes. Their viewing angle reaches as far as the façade of the coach house.
• The driveway down to the coach house is 3.15 metres wide at the entrance, then narrows down to 2.20 before turning into the courtyard. That's just over 7 feet, straightforward for most cars; very large ones may need to turn their mirrors in. There is a 3-point turn area at the bottom of the drive to drive out forwards. It is suitable for vehicles up to the size of a large car or small van.
• Because of the listed status of the building and some irreplaceable original features, as well as the naturally irregular stone flooring, only guests over the age of 12 are allowed, and pets are not permitted. Guests with mobility difficulties or significant visual impairments are welcome to inquire before booking about the challenges they may encounter.
