Review

We had a lovely stay in Auchengashell. The property had everything we needed for a dog, baby, toddlers and adults - they really have thought of everything and amazing location to explore from the front door. We made good use of the app, particularly for the recommended cafes/food and all were spot on. Would highly recommend Orroland, was a great family getaway.

Life Outdoors

An exremely well appointed hoiday property, off the beaten track, but still ideal for getting around Galloway. The area around the house was interesting in itself proving ideal for morning runs (for the keener visitor), walks down to the seashore or strolls around the grounds with pheasants, rabbits and squirrels (in ascending intelligence levels)! Bedrooms are very comforatable with great views and the large dining/kitchen is good for a family gathering. In terms of local sights we recommend Kirkcudbright as a town to while away a few hours and Threave Gardens are well worth a trip - the colours are just changing. A little further afield Caerlaverock Castle - both new and old versions are worthy of their castle status and finally for a great, but confortable hike we would recommend the walk around Loch Trool with its Alantic Rainforest and the atmospheric site (allegedly) of the Battle of Glentrool.

A perfect place to stay, come rain or shine

An absolute delight to stay here, the wildlife is wonderful: red squirrels, guinea fowl, bats, house martins..... and wonderful views. We enjoyed the loch, the wildflower meadow and the sculptures. The cottage itself has everything you might need, including the games room where we enjoyed several games of pool. It has comfortable beds and is very clean. We did struggle a bit with the Aga because we were not used to it, but cooked successfully though a little slower than usual! We have made some happy memories here.

Thank you for sharing such lovely memories. We are delighted that you caught glimpses of our red squirrels and enjoyed exploring the loch and sculpture paths. The meadow is truly alive with wildlife at this time of year. It is wonderful to hear that Auchengashell provided everything you needed for a comfortable, clean, and fun stay. For guests new to an electric Aga, the longer time to get up to temperature can feel like a slower, more mindful way of cooking, and we are glad you mastered it and had a thoroughly relaxing time.

Just a great place to relax!

Auchengashell is a lovely house. Perfect to relax with friends or family. Extremely comfortable and vey well equipped. You definitely feel away from it all, yet there is so much to see and do in this relatively unexplored part of Scotland. Melinda the host, couldn't have been nicer. All in all, a real treat!

Fabulous house in amazing grounds !

House was very comfortable and the grounds were fabulous. Could have done with a coffee machine and a tumble dryer but other than that everything was perfect

We're delighted you found the house very comfortable and the grounds fabulous! It sounds like you had a wonderful stay overall. We appreciate your feedback and have noted your recommendations for making the house even more practical and convenient for guests. For coffee, we hope you enjoyed the locally ground, responsibly sourced coffee provided with the cafetières as part of your welcome treats. For laundry, we chose the traditional ceiling-mounted airing rack (Sheila Maid) as an efficient and sustainable alternative. Thank you for visiting! We look forward to welcoming you back.

Just Pure Perfection for Christmas

This is the 2nd time this year we have stayed at Auchengashell and honestly I can't wait to return for a 3rd visit. We spent our family Christmas here and we arrived to the house being so beautifully decorated with tree and decorations. Our Christmas dinner around the large kitchen table was pure bliss. Thank you for all the lovely items left for us especially all the little dog treats. This house is not just a holiday home because as soon as you step indoors it just wraps you up like a big bear hug with all the beautiful rooms and well thought out items everywhere. I could honestly live here forever!!

Aileen, thank you so much for choosing to spend such a special family Christmas with us! It was an absolute joy to welcome you back for your second stay this year; your love of this place is the greatest compliment we could receive. We are thrilled that the festive decorations helped set the stage for your holiday. At Orroland, dogs are guests too, so we’re glad the dog welcome pack and treats went down a treat. Your description of the house feeling like a 'big bear hug' is delightful, and exactly the atmosphere we strive to create. We want every guest to feel that immediate sense of comfort and 'home' from the moment they step inside. Thank you for being such wonderful guests.

Lovely house and wonderful location

We were looking for a large house in which our three children, their partners and our grandchildren (nine of us in total) could get together for a week, whatever the weather. Auchengashell was lovely with plenty of space in the living room and kitchen/diner and also giving each of us a bedroom and bathroom of our own. The location is wonderful, with walks to the beach or other parts of the estate being very welcome. We really enjoyed the local wildlife with rabbits, hares, red squirrels and many birds easily observed from the house. We had a wonderful time and Melinda and Robert were very responsive to our queries and sorted out minor problems speedily.

3 Generation Summer Break

Auchengashell is a beautiful house, which served us very well. The spacious bedrooms have lovely quality beds, bedding, towels and toiletries. We really enjoyed seeing red squirrel and other wildlife around the estate, which is very tranquil to walk around. The pool room was well used by us all, particularly when it rained. The very well equipped kitchen with its huge table, made for comfortable family meals, and impressive wood burner in the lounge was really cosy. WIfi at the property is excellent, unusual for such a remote location. Such a peaceful setting, Orroland and Auchengashell are a unique experience.

Superb Rural Retreat with class!

Auchengashell is a spacious, classical, warm and comfortable home in stunning surroundings, it is generously equipped and the comfortable beds, linen and towels were of a high quality. Orroland Estate offers, Sea views and pebble beach access, beautiful grounds and woodlands, including a Loch and Pavilion ideal for family gatherings or a Romantic evening by the splendid fireplace. There is so much to explore for all ages, exciting the imagination and inspiring the creatives. The wildlife is bountiful and fascinating, Red Squirrel watching is an absolute must, and look out for the Roe deer. For `twitchers' there are Guinea fowl, Heron, Buzzards, Pheasant, Geese, Jay, and a host of coastal, small garden and woodland birds. We loved fetching fresh milk from the milk machine in the Village shop/cafe at Auchencairn, and enjoyed pottering around Kirkudbright and the Harbour. We explored coastal inlets and stumbled upon a Ministry of Defence Estate/Firing range with a beach; accessible when the flags are down and the Barrier up!! I'm reluctant to publish my review as I don't want too many people to find out about this Special hideaway!!
