About the area
Located at the heart of Kingston Deverill lies this small community of 17th century thatched properties at a bend on the River Wylye known locally as the Duck Pond. The property was built in the 1990’s to be in keeping with the houses around it. Kings Cottage has all the character and charm of a 17th century house and all the benefits of a modern home.
The cottage sits in a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the River Wylye is an internationally important chalk stream famed for the wildlife that live in and around it, including Trout, Water Voles, Egrets, Kingfisher’s and Otter’s. The Deverill’s boasts one of the oldest and original organic farms in the country which makes it a haven for rare bird species.
The Deverill’s are a mecca for hikers with walks straight out the door in every direction, including the 68-mile Mid-Wilts way which runs alongside the garden and takes in some of the finest countryside and downland areas in the country. The valley is the second least populated area in the country making the quiet roads ideal for cycling.
Stourhead House and Gardens is a stone’s throw away and is regarded as the jewel in the National Trust’ crown. Longleat, Centre parks and their amazing Aqua Sana spa are just over the hill, and Shearwater Lake is a closely guarded secret by the locals. The village sits equidistant between Bath and Salisbury and Stonehenge is a 30-minute drive across breath-taking scenery.
The village itself is very quiet with pubs and shops a few miles away including Bradley Hare owned by The Duke of Somerset and provides excellent food, as does The Bath Arms on the Longleat Estate plus The George at Longbridge Deverill is child friendly providing good food and space to play in the garden.
The history of the village dates back 4,000 years and there are several important bowl barrows from the Bronze Age or earlier, including one just a few yards from the house and visible from the garden, plus, the remains of the largest Roman Villa ever found in Britain was found just along the road in Brixton Deverill.
