A Street Like No Other
Few streets in Edinburgh carry the weight of history that Drummond Street does. It sits alongside a remarkable stretch of the Flodden Wall — the medieval fortification hastily built after the catastrophic Scottish defeat at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, and one of the best-preserved sections of Edinburgh’s ancient city defences. Walking past it each day is a quiet reminder that you’re living inside living history.

Just around the corner lies the world-famous Surgeons’ Hall, home to one of the most fascinating — and occasionally gruesome — museums in Scotland. It was the insatiable demand for cadavers from Edinburgh’s pioneering medical students and surgeons that drove William Burke and William Hare to their infamous and macabre trade in the 1820s, selling the bodies of their victims to the great anatomist Dr Robert Knox.
