FUN FACT: Did you know that the Bumblebee portion of the Barefoot Bumblebees name pays tribute to the rich history of Topsail Island. An original Operation Bumblebee tower stands just a mile away. Not long after the end of WWII, from 1946 to 1948, the United States began a program testing rockets to be used in modern jet propulsion, spacecraft, and missiles. The program, Operation Bumblebee, was named because, like the missiles of the time, bumblebees should not be able to fly. And yet they did. More Topsail history can be found at the Missiles and More Museum, located just down the road, in the heart of Topsail Beach.
