Help us help you have the very best stay and ensure that this home is a good fit for you! Please read entire description! This home is perfect for active & fit adult couples. 2 King beds w/en-suite bathrooms, Quality furnishings. Fully equipped with all essentials as well as gourmet stove & refrigerator and freezer drawers. Mirror lake is a short walk away. Great Fire-pit area and a covered deck for dining alfresco! 1 mile from downtown Highlands! This home is only accessible by using stairs from the bottom or top parking area. It is not a good fit for those with mobility issues or physical limitations. It's also not the best fit for small children. The home is not child proof, has many steep outdoor stairs, and does not offer child friendly amenities like a bath tub, baby gates or outlet covers. There is no space for a pack and play or crib and sleeping on the sofa is not permitted. There is no child safe play area within the home or outdoors around the property.

This home was very clean, conveniently located to downtown, restaurants and other excursions. We enjoyed the charm and open home design. The beautiful back porch was a great place to have our morning coffee and look at all of the beautiful fall foliage.

Beautiful Place

Our stay was great! Communication was great! Property is beautiful and perfect for a couple or two. The stairs would make it a challenge if you're unable to move up/down or carry your luggage but it was no issue if you're able to walk up/down maybe 20-30 steps.

10th Anniversary

We had a great time celebrating! The house is really cute, very clean (nice linens) and had everything needed for a weekend getaway. Parking is little tricky, and just as an FYI, there’s no way to get to the door without going up or down several steps.

Fun, relaxing weekend with friends

What a great weekend. Everything was perfect. House was clean. Well decorated. Had all the “extras” we needed. Close to town. And the back deck/fire pit were both perfect! Waking up to mid 60s in July was such a relief. Loved every bit of this weekend trip with our friends. Many thanks to Holly for high level of communication and response.

Cozy home in the mountains

The small house was lovely and thoughtfully, though minimally, furnished. Once inside we were most comfortable. Alas, access to the property was difficult. Parking was tough. We felt confined to the house at night because of access. In addition to many steps to the house, parking our Outback was a challenge due to drop offs and lack of space.

Charming, cozy and peaceful! A perfect Highlands retreat!

We absolutely loved our stay at Mountain Laurel Tree House! The cottage is beautifully decorated and very spacious. It is evident that the owners are mindful of all the small touches that make an impact on a guest's stay. We felt we had all the amenities that we could have possibly needed. Both bedrooms have their own private bath. Beds are super comfy! The fully equipped kitchen is perfect for cooking in, and the porch is so lovely for alfresco dining and having coffee in the morning. The evenings were cool enough, even in July, that we were able to enjoy having a fire in the fire pit. What an unexpected and wonderful bonus! The location is very convenient to downtown Highlands but is perfectly tucked away and very quiet and peaceful. Highly recommend and can't wait to stay here again!

Everything is included

The owners thought of everything! The home is beautifully decorated, well apportioned, and close to town. The owner was very responsive with any and all inquiries both before and during the stay. Our only disappointment was that it was wet and rainy throughout our visit precluding us from using the fire pit, which was a huge selling feature for us. The only other thing I would say is parking is challenging both above and below the house (the house is situated on a hillside) and traversing the stairs to/from the house with your belongings (especially when wet) can be challenging, again due to the hillside location.

Mother Daughter Trip

This was a mother (age 55), daughter (age 24) weekend. We had planned plenty of hiking for the three days and not a lot of time at home hanging out. I read the reviews about the road noise and was surprised that it was as bad as it was. Again, we didn't plan on hanging out at the house during the day, but if we had chosen to sit on the deck and read a book, it would have been a big distraction. The home smelled a bit musty/damp but after being inside for a while, we became accustomed to it. The bathrooms were very nice.

Perfect for a weekend getaway

Mountain Laurel was the perfect home for our weekend getaway! Well stocked, beautiful interior design, and good space both indoors and outside. We didn’t have time to take advantage of the fire pit, but the back porch was perfect to enjoy the mountain air and read. Would absolutely return again! One note: there are many stairs to the parking, so I recognize some guests would find the home difficult to navigate. Parking is also a little difficult with two cars in the dark. We had to do multi-point turns to get our cars situated and out of the road, without much light to guide where the road drops off. With a little more guiding light and reflectors to indicate parking spots, parking would’ve been perfect.

Weekend getaway

We unfortunately had to reschedule this weekend getaway to December from our original booking the beginning of October due to hurricane Helene issues. After attempts with the manager to accomplish this, VRBO assisted us in combination with the manager. We were hoping to see the beautiful Fall scenery in the NC mountains. Although we missed the colors of Fall, the beauty of the area did not disappoint. The rental was well appointed and very clean. We had some issues attempting to stream on the smart TV for the Thursday night football game only available on Prime. The manager did attempt to help us with this issue. The main room was quite chilly, and we were instructed to use the baseboard heat in that room so all was warm after that. The home has a wonderful deck. In warmer weather this would be a perfect hangout spot for relaxing, cocktails and morning coffee.

First trip to Highlands

The cottage itself is great. Secluded and a Short mile to downtown. Roomy for just the two of us and as advertised has all quality amenities needed We’re thoughtfully provided. High quality efficiency kitchen. Very comfortable king bed and living area. Central Hvac was perfect and large 55” TV was nice. Deck is large and very nice though it rained quite a lot during week so we only were able to enjoy it a couple of mornings for breakfast under the covered area . You do feel like you are in the trees!!! Parking is very tight and barely allowed room for our 4Runner up top, though there is a lower level area that we did not attempt to use. As noted, access is not good for those with mobility issues as the steps are numerous, steep and were slick due to the rain . Great property for a couples get away or good friends w the separate King rooms

Love the Highlands, House OK

Our impression of the house from the pictures online was quite different from what we found. The house is cute but we were expecting a larger place that would be a bit more comfortable for older, but fit, adults. The house is close to the town but it is not a walkable distance on curvy roads. The deck is lovely but there is busy road just below with trucks and traffic going by especially in the morning creating much road noise. The closets did not have hangers; the kitchen is strange and not conducive to much cooking. When we arrived the house was being pressure washed which meant we could not get in at all. The manager did respond when I called, but was not cordial or caring about it. I am not one to write negative reviews; it was not a bad place to stay but we expected something larger and overall more comfortable so it you don't have our expectations it is fine. Note there are cushions for outside chairs in the cabinet on the deck. We found them after a day or two of sitting on hard chairs.
