Check in was great. Close to the beach and pet friendly. The pool was nice. It was cold and when we called, they thought it may be able to be heated for 300-400, but weren’t sure. The hot tub quit working and did not get repaired during our stay, even though we called immediately. Kitchen was well stocked. Our real issue was with the cleanliness of the house. The oven had liquid spillage in the bottom, fridge smelled like bleach, second floor carpet was soggy (they had a dehumidifier on that level, so a known issue.) and the table and counter tops had crumbs and food and hadn’t been wiped down from the previous guests. Bathrooms were all clean though. Also much of the furniture had not had a cloth touch anything but the top surface in years. A good deep clean at this property would benefit it tremendously.

Arrived Sat evening. Could smell the mold as we entered the house. Dehumidifier with full bucket and humidity at 82% and small fans running in every bedroom. Immediately informed company of smell and dampness. Was told a “work order” was started. Told them we may have to leave as could not stay. Tried to sleep in least smelly room. Woke and husband had allergic reaction swelling of the face. Found black mold in the AC registers and in wood in bedroom. Packed up and left before 10. Told the company. Asked for any sort of consideration of refund, zero response. Do not stay here, house is uninhabitable and company had horrible response. Also at main entry no deadbolt, door was easily popped open. I have pictures to support.

Mother's day week escape

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We stayed at The Looking Glass cottage on oceanfront and thoroughly enjoyed the cottage and all its amenities. The cottage is well laid out on basically four floors. The top floor provides an escape with a day bed, views of the beach, wet bar, full bath and flat screen. The weather was not conducive, but being in an area that we could access many restaurants, seafood and food markets made the weather a non event. We especially enjoyed the hot tub and brand new gas grill. All in all a pleasant experience.

Some dislikes was the kitchen was very outdated and on the bottom floor. Our family is always in the kitchen/living room open space, but we didn’t have an ocean view. I was surprised to see carpet throughout. Smelled kinda musty when first entering. Lastly, everyone who would like to go to the balcony has to go through a bedroom to get to it.

Reviewer Comments: the property needs updating. it does not appear that it has been updated since the 1990's. there were rust stains on the refrigerator/freezer, and the garbage compartment would not stay closed. the carpeting needs to be replaced, as does the countertops. there was no shower in the upstairs master suite, just a whirlpool tub from the 1990's. great location, and easy access to the beach. many appliances which were helpful.

Also easy access to local attractions such as mini golf, Jockey Ridge and Wright Brothers national park. There are a lot of nearby restaurants. We enjoyed Millers and Mulligans. I was disappointed that there were a number of maintenance issues that would be relatively easy to correct that had not been addressed. Such as- Burnt out bulbs, florescent lights in kitchen barely worked, switch for pool lights is broken. one jet control knob on hot tub is missing, jets on master suite Jacuzzi tub don't work at all. AC seemed to be relatively new and worked well. Separate unit for each floor.

Upgrade your cookware, please.Pool is small and NOT the one pictured adjacent to the house. The pool is actually not in the listing main picture since it is next to the road in front of the house. Carpets smelled like pets (to be expected with a pet-friendly rental) but maybe do a steam vac occasionally to remove smell. Better yet, replace carpeted rooms with hardwood.All negatives aside, the location is EXCELLENT. Convenient to town, grocery, restaurants. The views are fantastic!

The public access nearby made it easy for friends to join us on the beach. The comfortable beds and clean rooms were appreciated, although some rooms could benefit from updates to cabinets, dressers, and fixtures. The well-equipped kitchen and family room provided ample space for gatherings, and the pool area with its amenities was a great place to relax. However, the challenge with the deeply covered sandy walkway to the beach, particularly for those with knee issues, is worth noting for future guests. Nevertheless, the exceptional service from Susan, Whitney, Terry, and Tiffany added to the overall positive experience. We will consider staying at Looking Glass again in the future and would recommend this home to anyone looking to stay in this location.

We’d give this a solid B rating based on our VRBO/Homeaway experiences.Pros: 1)Great location —beach access, near Jockey Ridge State Park; large, 2) comfortable bedrooms (actually there are 6 BRs: 2 on main floor, 3 on 2nd floor - one with bunk beds, 1 on 3rd fl - crows nest w single bed and great sitting area & best tv viewing place); just 4 bathrooms (1 on first fl, 2 on 2nd fl, 1 on 3rd fl).3) nice kitchen, dining, LR layout for family/ friend gatheringCons: 1) very close to adjacent houses, which could be noisy in regular season, 2) normal ‘beach house wear and tear’, 3) NO basic resources like garbage bags, toilet paper, laundry and dish detergent (1 day’s worth provided), bathroom soap, salt and pepper (let alone other spices); so we spent considerable money stocking the house with ‘basics’ that we are used to finding in rental houses, 4) the technology is old and didn’t work for us (even with whiz millennials working the problems), so bring your own...

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The location is perfect. Restaurants, shopping, grocery stores are all in very close proximity. The beach access is awesome, being only 75 yards from the ocean! The house has everything you need for a week of vacation. The floorplan is typical for the Outer Banks. The house is dated. The exterior needs attention, carpets are old, the living room furniture is nearing the end of its useful life. Some of the mattresses need replacing and the bathrooms are very dated. We had a very strong pet odor in the house, but a can of Febreze took care of that. The kitchen is very nice, well-lit and perfect for the typical family gathering while cooking. The pool is enclosed in a privacy fence and offers a great respite from a day at the beach. The hot tub is great, and there is a nice bathroom and shower in the pool house. It's a great property that could be exceptional with an investment in updates and renovations.

Great Location but house not as advertised

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The house was in a great location and right on the water. It is close to the Nags Head pier and most everything in OBX is less than 5 minutes away. The main views of the ocean from the house were only available from the upper level bedrooms. The ocean view deck is only accessible from the 2 bedrooms on the upper floor. The master bathroom has only a jacuzzi tub and does NOT have a shower head so the master bedroom had to share the other showers in the house. The top level bedroom did not have working A/C and maintenance had to bring a window unit in order to keep that room below 80 degrees. There were supposed to be 5 bathrooms but there were only 4. This caused us to need to share bathrooms even more. Great location but not as advertised.

Since you departed, the HVAC system for the top level has been replaced! We are sorry that you encountered uncomfortable temperatures on that floor during your stay. We have updated the description on our website to reflect that there isn't a shower head in the Master Bath in hopes of providing clarity outside of the photos. We hope to welcome you back to the Outer Banks again in the near future!

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Overall, we had a great week. We had an issue with the AC that Beach Realty was on the ball about, so that was nice and much appreciated, though the upper level bedrooms were still fairly toasty. A few updates are needed, such as new electric outlets as the plug doesn’t always stay in the outlet (especially in the kitchen). There was a smell in the upper level bathroom with only the bathtub, the more it progressed through the week the worse it became. And as mentioned earlier, the AC needs some attention. . The kitchen was well stocked for all cooking needs, though the trash bag area could use some updating. The pool was in great shape however the hot tub seems to need a new master button to turn the jets on as it did not work. The location was wonderful, the weather was great and Al in all we had a great time. Thank you to Beach Realty for their attentiveness and prompt responses.

Good, not great

Let me start by saying that my friends and I had an amazing vacation at The Looking Glass! The location was perfect, it had enough rooms for every couple, and had beautiful views of and access to the ocean. The check-in process was very easy and the property manager replied within minutes of me contacting them. I did read some reviews saying the AC was an issue, but the AC worked perfectly, even in the upstairs ship watch area. There were a few things that I did not like about the property though. The main living area smelled horribly of cat urine and I ended up buying tons of scent plug ins to cover up the smell. The house also was not stocked well at all. I have stayed in several vacation homes and I have never stayed in a house without basic things like toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc. They did have a travel size dishwasher soap and a few bars of soap, but I spent a lot of money stocking the house myself for my guests. (I will add that there were tons of appliances though!) The house also seems extremely outdated for how expensive it is. I understand that the location probably has a lot to do with the pricing, but the house could use some upkeep (trash can drawer/compartment in kitchen broken and would not close, random sliding door laying on the balcony floor upstairs, unpleasant smelling carpet). Overall, I think this is a good place to stay if you are coming for a beach access home/vacation in a great location and do not mind stocking it yourself. Simple updates could make this a 10/10 in my opinion! Thank you for letting us stay and for the amazing memories we all shared here!

Looking Glass is looking a little tired

I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Our group of 10 stayed at Looking Glass in November. The rental was fairly expensive for this house. It's a little long in the tooth as evidenced by ripped carpeting in downstairs bedroom; windows so grimy with sea salt that you cannot see out. (We actually got windex and cleaned a few of them ourselves to enjoy the view); and other signs of wear. The decor is dated, the house shows a fair amount of wear and tear. The kitchen floor appears to be a fake wood contact paper. The rental company wasn't terribly helpful with the fireplace not working and no one was available to come check it out. We asked the rental company for an inventory of kitchen supplies so we'd know what to bring and the response was, "It has everything you need." Really? How do you know it has everything we need? And as it happens, it did not have everything we needed. In fact, the kitchen didn't even have a full set of measuring utensils. We also asked the rental company to ensure the hot tub was working. All they would say is they would inspect it the day before we arrived. However, we would have been sunk if it wasn't working the day before we arrived since they did not provide 24/7 maintenance service to deal with it. Sorry, but a professional rental company needs to provide 24/7 even over a holiday weekend. The house was functional for our visit. Could have used a few extra blankets in the closets. On the plus side, they do offer a linen service. Our bed was comfortable enough. But the rental cost was pretty high for what you get in this old house with contact paper flooring. Should our group return to OBX, we will find another house.

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was very happy with the location. I was very dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We rented this house for its easy access to the ocean, knowing it had some understandable wear and tear. Although we had a great time, our party of 12 was highly disappointed with the quality of the house considering the 5 figure price we paid.The positives: Rental company was responsive to questions. Located right on the beach! The negatives: Pictures online are deceiving and not current. Makes it look nicer than it is. This house is one of 40 owned by the rental group (or whoever owns them). It is NOT well cleaned. We found a Gatorade bottle under a bed, food wrappers in a closet, underwear in a drawer, cigarette butts around the property, and popsicle wrappers on the deck. One room had dirty sheets on the bed. Most beds had dirty top linens. The grill on the deck was disgusting (we cleaned it). The garbage can drawer in the kitchen doesn’t close properly and slides open when you close it. The couch and bunk bed room smelled like urine. The bathroom door on the main floor was challenging to close. The vent cover was covered in dust, although the filter itself was clean. Washer/dryer left brown marks all over our clothes. There’s water damage on nearly every ceiling. As we had some rain while there, we had multiple spots in the house where water was actively leaking. Maintenance came, but did nothing to address. We kept a bucket out all week in one room to catch water dripping from the ceiling. As others have stated, a shower in the master instead of a tub would be helpful, as well as a 2nd fridge. We kept our drinks in coolers all week. The pool is located near the street, and not attached to the house - you have to go through the yard to get to it. Kind of a pain. The only way to get to the beach from the pool (or vice versa) is to go through the house, which isn’t the best option when wet. Overall, this house needs some major and minor updates. We would not rent this house again.

This property was a great choice. The property was clean when we arrived. Kitchen was very well equipped and having the rental company leave the CoolCabanas tent was a very nice touch. (We bought one upon returning home).Overall we were very happy with this property .... have a few suggestions that would improve it in case the owners would be interested: *) a shower in master BR instead on only a sunken tub would be great ... obviously a big expense .... just noting that would be ideal.*) a window unit AC for the loft area. The area is great and we used the shower there (given the lack on one in the Master BR), but high summer temps made the loft a bit uncomfortable in the daytime.*) many large vacation properties have a second fridge ..... we weren't inconvenienced with only one ... just an observation.Property managers were very responsive ... and allowed early entry which was great sine we had a 3 1/2 month old baby in our group.Overall, a very good experience and we would rent Looking Glass again.PS: noted the owners were Auburn fans ... our group are all alum and were there while AU made it to the College Baseball World Series .... WDE

Great week at the beach

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The only downside of this house is that the deck with the view of the ocean is on the second level off a bedroom. The outside shower is located by the pool in front of the house so one would either walk through the house or walk around through the beach access road and cross over to the shower. Bit more sand in the house from the kids. Living room/kitchen very receptive to everybody being together. Ship watch level is great. Right across the street from Austin seafood market which was great. Access to the beach is great and we appreciated the early entry on Sunday.
