It was the most picturesque, homely place. We were made to feel so at home, when we arrived a log fire was already going, and we were a little later than expected so Renate unloaded our Morrisons food delivery for us which was so kind. The house was so clean, the gardens were so well kept the whole farm was just gorgeous and Renate gave us a tour too, as well as letting us roam freely - which we all loved especially my two children, 7years and 20months.. they loved being so free and feeding the geese, and exploring the gardens. We will definitely be returning. It was a perfect weekend.

A tranquil short break with friends

Pond cottage is exactly what we’ve expected. We have a wonderful 3 nights there, surrounded by farm animals and green trees ! Renate the landlady is easily approachable for our needs . Incredible stay at The Pond Cottage .

Beautiful place surrounded by nature

Me and my partner had a good stay at the Pond Cottage.The kitchen is extremely well equipped and stocked.Rooms are very tidy and homely feeling. Bathroom is clean and pleasant to use.We didn't explore the surroundings but the small animals around the farm were very pleasant to watch from the house. Being surrounded by nature really brings about peace of mind and heart.Enjoyed the stay tremendously. Thanks again!

We enjoyed our stay very much. The house has a great location and you are also allowed to walk around the hosts' property, which is really extraordinary big. Delightful

Pond cottage was ideallic, surrounded by beautiful countryside and gardens. The facilities were fantastic and the cottage well insulated. Ducks and geese were fun to watch and little squirrels hopping around the garden.

Just as expected, middle of no-where, perfect story book cottage, pond, ducks, geese, lambs, chickens. Hosts were great, cottage well equipped, beds comfortable with en-suite in each of the 2 bedrooms. The pool just topped it off, superb, thank you.

Pond cottage

The cottage was stunning. 2 large en suite bedrooms with wonderful beams on the ceiling, a big kitchen/diner and a nice lounge. All this set on a working farm. John and Renata were wonderful hosts and very attentive to every query we had. John even let us help with installing additional posts to support his fantastic tree collection and he showed us a nest if blackbirds in his tractor!

A Lovely Stay In the Devon Countryside!

It is difficult to describe all the wonderful things about Pond Cottage. John and Renate treat you more like long missed family than lodgers. The grounds are beautiful in a way only a Devon farm can be. My children and I enjoyed the ducks, the sheep, and all the wonderful farm life. It forces you to slow down and enjoy the more important things in life. We will definitely be back!

"Heaven in the Country"

Our visit to this VRBO was like stepping back in time. It was located in the English countryside on a beautifully maintained farm dating back to the 1500's. Everywhere you looked, gave you a sense of peace. The landscape, grand arboretum, the flowers, the occasional sounds of sheep off in the distance was glorious. Our accommodations were in a converted onetime stable, the interior beautifully crafted, with all the amenities one would need. The proprietors were gracious, kind and accommodating. We would highly recommend this location for a peaceful get away.

Half term family break

We all enjoyed our rural escape to Pond Cottage! John and Renate were friendly and welcoming to their beautiful farm. The boys were able to cuddle some baby goslings as soon as we arrived. We were given all the information we needed, and were free to explore. The cottage is equipped with everything you need, and is lovely inside. WI-FI is available. There is a private garden with a picnic bench in a sunny corner. The boys loved being surrounded by the animals, and feeding the ducks and geese. The swimming pool was also an added bonus, and very welcome in the sunny weather. Would definitely recommend a visit! Thank you.

A really lovely, peaceful retreat, with a couple of niggles

We were pleasantly surprised by the peaceful location, the amazing views of Devon landscape and the lovely owners, John and Renate. On entering the property we saw that it’s bigger than it looks on pictures and was on the surface very clean. It had every piece of equipment you could imagine, especially the kitchen. It was great to have a selection of DVDS and books, cleaning equipment, a lot of storage, underfloor heating and remote control blinds. Sadly, the internet was not good enough to hold Zoom meetings but if you’re not working while staying at the cottage then you should be fine. On closer inspection, harder to reach and places could use a deep clean- the corners, high beams in the bedrooms, high shelves and sills and cupboard tops were all extremely dusty and there were a lot of cobwebs, dead insects and spiders. A deep clean once a month should do it. We loved the pool and it’s a shame the weather wasn’t better so we could use it more. We had a really nice time and would love to return, but we’d love to see the washing machine replaced as it’s very rusty and has black mould inside so the clothes we washed smelt worse afterwards. We’d also love to see the showers updated. They’re those electric showers from the 80s/90s which are either freezing or boiling with no in between. In order to find a temperature we could stand it took 15 minutes of fiddling with the dials, and next time we turned it on the settings were obsolete and we had to start the process again.

An electrician was also called to check the showers. He fully serviced both and declared them in good working order. Traumhaft!!!

Noch nie wurden wir so herzlich empfangen wie hier! Familie Huckle hat mit viel Liebe zum Detail dieses luxuriöse Cottage hergerichtet, auch die Ausstattung lässt keine Wünsche offen. Sie finden hier ein paradiesisches Stück Land, auf dem Sie neben Johns beeindruckenden Baum-Beständen aus aller Welt auch die Farmtiere (Schafe, Enten, Hühner, Gänse) hautnah erleben können. Insbesondere für Kinder (aber auch für die Erwachsenen!) ein tolles Erlebnis. Es hat uns so gut gefallen, dass wir nächstes Jahr unseren Sommerurlaub wieder dort verbringen werden.

Wunderschönes Cottage in einsamer Lage

Wir haben 12 Urlaubstage im Pond Cottage verbracht und die Ruhe auf der einsam gelegenen Farm genossen. Das geräumige Haus ist sehr komfortabel ausgestattet und geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Die ländliche Idylle lädt zu Spaziergängen ein. Auch das von John angelegte Arboretum und die Obstgärten sind einen Besuch wert. Besonders gefreut haben wir uns über den herzlichen Empfang der Vermieter mit Blumen selbstgemachter Marmelade und Eiern von den eigenen Hühnern. Im nahegelegenen Witheridge bekommt man alles Nötige für den Kühlschrank und sogar Geld aus einem Automaten. Der Dorfladen hat besonders kundenfreundliche Öffnungszeiten. Eine Herausforderung waren für uns die schmalen Zufahrtswege mit den unübersichtlichen Hecken zu beiden Seiten. Zu Beginn sind wir über entgegenkommende Fahrzeuge sehr erschrocken. Das Ausweichen mussten wir erst lernen. Die aufmerksame Betreuung von Renate und John mit guten Tipps und auch der selbstgemachte Rharbarbercrumble hat uns gut getan. Liebe Schwarzwälder, Wir haben Ihren Besuch genossen, Ihr Interesse an den Bäumen, den Obstgärten und meinem Gemüsegarten hat uns sehr gefreut. Ihre Hilfe beim Schafetreiben wußten wir sehr zu schätzen und vielen Dank dafür, daß sie Pond Cottage so tadelos hinterlassen haben, sogar the wood burner war neu gelegt. After many years working as a GP in South Devon—where we enjoyed boat building, sailing, renovating houses, and raising our four children—we felt drawn to a quieter, more rural way of life. After a long search, we discovered Bradford Barton, a beautifully unspoilt and secluded 15th-century farm set in the heart of Devon, perfectly positioned between Exmoor and Dartmoor along the Two Moors Way.

With its spacious farmhouse and a collection of characterful old barns, it felt like the perfect place to begin a new chapter—and we’ve never looked back. We truly enjoy welcoming guests and sharing this special place with others.

The farm spans 150 acres of beautiful meadows, enclosed by traditional Devon hedgerows that provide a haven for wildlife. After lovingly restoring the farmhouse and cottage, we feel incredibly fortunate to call this special place home.

While no longer a working farm, the land remains rich and productive. We care for three established apple orchards, which supply our 250-year-old cider press—used each autumn to make fresh apple juice and traditional cider.

There are also three ancient deciduous woodlands, a stunning 10-acre arboretum with over 330 specimen trees (including rare varieties), and a recently planted 10-acre grove of 350 Giant Redwoods—remarkable trees known for their longevity and exceptional carbon capture.
