Tired, Disappointing, requires a massive overhall and update, not what we hoped for. Avoid.
The only thing I can say that is good is the location, quiet, peaceful with lovely views over the Dyfi valley.
Before we went the website advises that directions will be on the app, the only thing on the app is a post code, I called the owner a week before and was promised details in the post, the day after we came back still nothing has arrived. Put the Post code in Google maps and miraculously it takes you to the front door and as for keys well it is obvious when you get there.
When you enter the house the first thing you notice is no welcome pack, every cottage we have visited in the last 20 years has had a folder with details of the property, H&S instructions, details of the appliances and info about the local area, here nothing. Didn't find a visitors book until the morning we were leaving, tucked away in a draw, the last entry 2014.
In the kitchen there is an old fridge with a broken door mounted bottle stand, a dishwasher, washing machine and an electric hob and oven, no instructions provided for anything There were no cleaning supplies only half a bottle of washing up liquid a very old used sponge and a brush, many of the plates in the cupboards and the only baking tray were dirty and I had to wash up before we could eat.
In the sitting room are 2 sofas and an armchair all very old with fraying covers, gave no support and were very uncomfortable.
Upstairs 2 Bedrooms, the main has a metal frame wood slated double? bed, that is very small, if you are 6' plus you would struggle. My wife referred to it as a brick as it is VERY firm, so she tried the single beds in the 2nd bedroom. These must be as old or older than the sofa's. consequently she did not sleep well at all and kept falling asleep in the car when we went out.
This property requires a major update with new furniture a priority.
We have been coming to this area for nearly 20 years, and we love west Wales, there are lots of really nice properties in the area but sadly not this one, sorry.
"In response to a review that goes beyond fair criticism for a cottage that routinely achieves ‘excellent’ 92% plus rating.
I would refer you to the glowing reviews on the Homeaway website. That a 5 Star cottage can become a 1 star cottage in a week beggars belief. You gave me no indication during your stay that you found Penycoed wanting. I am sorry that the cottage did not fulfill you expectations, but as you did not contact me nor respond to my attempts to contact you, I was unable to rectify matters, for you.
In response to the points of your complaints and criticisms:
Directions were emailed to you, and the post code takes you direct to the door.
It is not practical for my caretaker to leave a Welcome Pack, and I not advertise that I do so. Fire procedure instructions, extinguisher and refuse collection details are prominently located in the kitchen. There is a first aid box. The simple central heating controls have notes above them, and there is no restriction to the central heating. The television has notes next to it. There are always fresh flowers placed in the vases at each changeover.
There are notes regarding the operation of appliances in the end drawer of the dining room dresser. The hob, microwave and toaster are all new this year.
Washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, scourers, cloths and kitchen towels are provided.
The sofas are not new, but they are hand built with properly sprung bases and backs and were bought for their quality and longevity. They are re-upholstered as necessary, rather than be disposed for new.
The cottage contains many antique pieces of Welsh furniture of a type and quality not found in the majority of holiday lets, but I am quite happy to share these with my guests, and likewise my guests appreciate the character they add to the cottage.
The bed is antique also, albeit with a clean, modern quality named brand orthopaedic mattress. Nobody has complained about the size of the beds before.
Penycoed is a period property with contemporaneous Welsh oak furniture, Such pieces are passed from generation to generation, and the majority of guests appreciate the character and style of the cottage in its secluded rural location."
What a beautiful place to stay . Thank you Mary for making us feel so welcome .
Such a wonderful host we will definitely go again
Lovely cottage and location
Beautiful cottage. Had everything we wanted and the open fire was just what is needed after a long day's walk!
Wonderful base for lots of walking, stunning views.
So lucky to have found this place, completely out of the way where your only neighbours are the sheep and the cows! you could hear a pin drop.
We used it as a base to go out each day for lovely walks with the dog, Mary was extremely helpful and the place was spotless when we got there. the scenery is beautiful and a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
If you are looking for tranquillity and some easy, or challenging! walks, this is the perfect place to stay.
A lovely little cottage, perfect for family or friends
We had a lovely long weekend- the cottage is very cute and garden is beautiful. It is quite remote but we drove to both Barmouth (45 minutes) and Aberdovey (25 minutes) We would definitely stay again.
Pretty cottage with beautiful views
We are just back from a great stay in this cottage. The location is very tranquil with beautiful views over the valley. If you're looking for somewhere to get away from it all, this is the place. Our kids loved the big garden and looking out for kites and squirrels. The cottage has everything you need for your stay including good WiFi and Sky tv for rainy days. There's also a supply of magazines and books which were much appreciated. The owner, Mary, is very helpful and suggested outings for us in the area. Our favourite places were the Vale of Rheidol steam train, Aberdovey seaside resort and King Arthur's Labyrinth.
