Beautiful waterfront location.
We enjoyed our stay in Jonesport. The house is right on the water, it was peaceful and relaxing. Great location for visiting Downeast Maine. We did day hikes at Cutler, Petite Manan, and Quoddy Head State Park, among others. All were an hour or less from Jonesport. The house was comfortable and had everything we needed. The best room is the sunroom that looks out on the water! We used our cell phones as mobile hotspots (Verizon), or the library right across the street has wireless, so you can be as unplugged or not as you want to be! Scott was very nice and easy to communicate with. Great vacation spot. There are a couple of convenience stores in Jonesport, and a good takeout nearby, Bayview. Good grocery and restaurants in Machias, ~20 minute drive.
Great bones and potential, but....
The positives: This house is a grand old place situated in a unique spot on Moosabec Bay with great views of lobster boats and Beals Island. In the mornings we were able to watch Lobstermen checking their traps right from the indoors room with two large windows and a good pair of binoculars. On Beals Island there is the Great Wass Nature Reserve, that is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It is remote, pure and natural. A true gem of the Down East coast. The location also gave us relatively good access to all points further North along the Down East coast. We visited and loved Cutler (great coastal hike) and Lubec (great light house and scenery) As far as the house itself and the living conditions.
The kitchen was adequate and nothing more. The beds were comfortable enough and there was room left in the dressers to store your clothes. There is a room with a small sectional and TV where you can relax, if you are into TV. There is a dining room , but no overhead light, just a floor lamp for the entire room. There is a great fire pit out back and plenty of fire wood stored on the property, but not for guests to use.
The negatives: The house is situated adjacent to a former IGA grocery store that is out of business and in a state of disrepair. The house is quite close to the main road that runs thru Jonesport, and traffic (the local lobstermen) start travelling into work about 4:00 am and you can hear them very well from the front two bedrooms (your windows will likely be open and that makes the road noise very noticeable) The only bathroom in the house is tiny and during our stay there was no working light, except for a plug in night light in the vanity.
I tried replacing the bulb in the ceiling fixture and that did not fix the problem, same for the vanity light fixture. Inside the vanity itself is rust and who knows what.... The tub/shower does work, but that's it. The washer dryer set up is a bit unusual. The washer is in the kitchen and the dryer in a small room off the kitchen. To dry clothes you must open the window and position the vent hose so that it allows the hot air to flow out the window and you must close the window down to hold the vent hose in place and in addition you will be instructed to place a chair in front of the dryer door to keep it closed during the drying cycle.
This place is not for someone who is not willing to put up with quite a few eccentricities.
For future renters, we are 175ft off of Main Street which has a 25mph speed limit. If you close the new front windows you virtually don't hear anything. The dining room has 2 floor lamps and an overhead candle chandelier, will post new picture. The bathroom light has a pull chain and a switch located just outside the door in the hallway. The bathroom is very old and plan to renovate in the near future. It's small, has been painted and clean. It's an old claw foot tube/shower. It gets the job done. Please, the washer and dryer are for housekeeping and emergencies. The dryer door got bent and is now repaired. Guests are more than welcome to use the fire pit. Please get your firewood off the beach, or can be purchased at the local market. Firewood that is stored on the porch is for winter time use. The old IGA is actually a historic site that originally was an opera house. We are glad that it is closed as it adds to our privacy and we would like to buy it. Eccentricities....welcome to Jonesport.
Beach Victorian On The Bluff
We had a great time staying in this house. The views were amazing and the house was nice and cozy. We really enjoyed walking on the beach and liked the close proximity of the lobster wharf.
A Charming Seaside Cottage
My wife and I are fans of small towns, and there are few prettier small towns than those on the downeast coast of Maine. We were looking for a location for a first wedding anniversary, and found it, in Jonesport. Jonesport is a small fishing village, largely lobster, on the coast of Maine. The town has enough basic staples, small grocery store, small super market, hardware store and bank to make it livable, but not too much to hinder your escape from it all. The joy to wake up to the sights of lobster boats at anchor in the morning, to the cry of the seagulls, or the stunning beauty of a Maine sunrise and sunset, make this cottage the place to be. The owner was awesome, helpful at the last minute, and even left a bottle of wine, glasses, and a floral bouquet for us on arrival, with a nice note wishing us well on our anniversary. Attention to detail, a nice restoration, a comfortable cottage that sleeps 6, and a setting that few in the world are blessed to enjoy, what more could you ask for? Run, don't walk to rent this one!
Beautiful home, great location
This home is absolutely delightful--especially if you love old houses. It has been wonderfully restored. The location is great--right on the water but a short walk into the small town. My daughter loved playing on the beach and finding seashells. Be ready for a true "away from it all" vacation--there is no internet service and cell service was very spotty. Great for getting kids (and adults) away from their screens for a while! The town is small and remote but there is a small grocery store and a couple convenience stores in town, plus some larger grocery stores a short drive away (I was a little worried about exactly HOW remote we would be before the trip). We loved sitting in the room looking out over the ocean and watching the boats go by. An ocean breeze kept us cool even as the rest of the state sweltered in 90 degree weather the week we were there. I would recommend this house to anyone looking for a quiet, beautiful spot for a vacation.
We stayed here with family for 4 nights and had a wonderful time. The view from the house was spectacular and the location was perfect. the kids enjoyed searching for seashells and muscles on the shore and roasting marshmallows by the fire. The house was very comfortable and had everything that was promised. I would definitely recommend this home for a relaxing and peaceful vacation.
