Visitors notice the striking aqua colour of Georgian Bay. This phenomenon occurs when light refracts through calcite crystals in the water, which form as calcium carbonate leaches from the dolostone escarpment. These tiny crystals bend light in a unique way, creating the vivid hues the region is known for—part of the fascinating geology of the Niagara Escarpment.
