My wife and I, along with our 12 pound dog, Cookie, spent the month of February at Casa Refugi. We are not golfers, and did not know anything about 7 Lakes, but we like the south Palm Springs area and it's not easy to find affordable housing if you are traveling with your dog. We were intrigued by the mid-century furnishings and ambiance. The condo is as pictured, though it feels a little more empty than the photos would suggest. Furnishings are authentic, but not very comfortable. The kitchen is adequate, as are the bathrooms, though they do not seem to have been updated. The private courtyard that adjoins the guest bedroom is pleasant, although its location right on a busy access street means you'll hear a fair amount of traffic. The Parker Hotel is just past it, protected by a large hedge. For a full week all-day hedge-trimming was going on there, and on several occasions loud outdoor hotel parties could be heard well into the night. 7 Lakes has around 170 condos, generally in pairs, and 15 different pool/spa areas. It's very pleasant to stroll the grounds, and many of the units have really spectacular views. It's definitely an older crowd, with few people under retirement age. The grounds are in wonderful condition, with plenty of mature fruit trees for all to share. The pool, spa and grill that we shared were all showing signs of age, and much of the pool's outdoor furniture was rusted out and seemed to have been stacked there and forgotten. Casa Refugi's own patio furniture was new and in good condition. Bottom line - what with groundskeeping, pool cleaning, car traffic, hotel parties, golf tournaments, etc. this is a busy and sometimes rather noisy location. The clubhouse restaurant is excellent, and the Sunday brunch is mandatory! If you are a so-so golfer, the executive course (2600 yards - 18 holes) is just about right. As is generally the case in Palm Springs, there were no open areas where it was ok to run the dog, but there are dog parks fairly close by. In terms of its general location, 7 Lakes is in a very convenient spot, with plenty of shopping, dining and retail nearby, and downtown Palm Springs just 10 minutes away. If you are older, a golfer, a dog owner and/or a fan of mid-century architecture and design, this is a good, moderately-priced option.
