Southwest Ireland: Classic links courses
This region is known for its classic links golf, dramatic coastal scenery, and is a popular choice for first-time golf travelers to Ireland.
51mins from the House
Ballybunion Golf Club (Old Course), County Kerry: Considered a "rite of passage" for links enthusiasts, this course is known for its rugged and natural layout with towering sand dunes. The Old Course has received high praise from golf legend Tom Watson, and the club also offers the Cashen Course.
When they relocated the clubhouse to the southern end at Ballybunion in 1971, a course that had been relatively unknown was soon standing out from the rest. The clubhouse move transformed the course; a finish that was once made up of a lacklustre set of back-to-back par 5s shifted to a new stretch of holes set in spectacular dunes that make for truly some of the most incredible holes in all of links golf. A true golfing test, especially if thereâs an onshore gale blowing, this course has earned its status as the best in Ireland.
1.5hr from the House
Lahinch Golf Club, County Clare: Often called "The St. Andrews of Ireland," Lahinch combines traditional links with some quirky features, including the blind par-3 "Dell" hole. The course offers spectacular ocean views and has two 18-hole links courses. Lahinch (Old) The splendid links at Lahinch Old Course, considered by many to be the St. Andrews of Ireland, is a reflection of how link golf architecture has evolved over the years. After it was given a remodel by none other than Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1927 (Old Tom Morris having already made adjustments in 1894 to the holes originally laid out by three Limerick golfers), only a few of the Morrisâ original holes, like the Klondyke par-5 fourth, and Dell par-3 fifth, remained. Another chapter arrived in the 1980s, Donald Steel altering some of MacKenzieâs holes, and in the 2000s, Martin Hawtree rebuilt everything and added four new holes. Little remains of the Old Tom Morris original, but what has been now created is a masterpiece.
2.25hr from the House
Waterville Golf Links, County Kerry: Situated in a remote, scenic location surrounded by the sea, Waterville provides a serene and challenging links experience. Over a century old, it is consistently ranked among the top courses in the world. Waterville Golf started at Waterville in 1889 with a modest nine holes, but it wasnât until the club had folded in the 1950s and was purchased by Jack Mulcahy that the âbeautiful monsterâ that exists today (after updates from Tom Fazio) was created in 1973. Situated on a lush promontory surrounded by the sea, its stunning, remote location offers incredible views over the neighbouring Ballinskelligs Bay with holes laid out on former potato fields. Fairways here gently undulate, the front nine playing across relatively flat ground before the back nine weaves its way through avenues of tall dunes. The collection of par 3s is as strong as any in Ireland, and the elevated 17th, which plays toward the horizon along the bay, is a breathtaking piece of course architecture.
1.15hr from the House
Tralee Golf Club, County Kerry: Designed by Arnold Palmer, Tralee offers a spectacular and challenging layout with views of the Atlantic Ocean from every hole, particularly along the dramatic back nine. Situated on rugged sand dunes astride Tralee Bay in the southwest corner of Ireland, Tralee has long been considered Arnold Palmerâs finest design. On land that couldnât be more suitable for a golf course, Palmer finished the layout in the early 1980s, locating greensites before scouring the landscape for the natural fairways that Mother Nature would lead to them. Starting along high cliffs, just like Pebble Beach, and finishing in high dunes similar to those found at the close of Ballybunion, Tralee is a captivating and varied course that never fails to stimulate the senses.
