Time Travel in Luxury! Winner of the 2016 Architectural Preservation Award from the Nantucket Preservation Trust. 55 Union Street offers the best of all that Nantucket should offer, beachy elegance in a historical setting. This meticulously preserved house in town was built in 1834 and was masterfully restored in 2015/16; traditional craftsmanship is coupled with state of the art convenience. Situated in town, the home has proximity to Main Street and equal proximity to the Harbor and Creeks beaches.
55 Union was built in 1834 by Island master-builder John Nicholson and was first owned by Whaling Captain Charles Andrews. The property briefly passed out of the Andrews family hands, but was repurchased by them in the 1890s and remained in the family until obtained by the current owners in 2014. The house retains all its original architectural details; plaster walls, moldings, wide plank floors, and crown glass windows.
The house boasts three bedrooms and a sleeping loft: A master suite with Queen Bed, sitting area and en-suite bath with spa shower and double sinks. A second oversized Queen Bedroom and a twin bedroom. There is also built-in full in a sleeping loft located on the third floor, along with two and a half baths. The front and back parlor; dining room and a state of the art kitchen. Decorated by an interior designer with a mixture of antiques and modern classics with a sensational eye for detail, comfort and casual relaxed elegance.
First Floor: The first floor has a large entry foyer. To the left of the entrance, a large bright front parlor decorated with the sandy palate of the beach in mind. The back parlor, evokes a cozy English den, with papered walls and a cozy velvet sofa bed.
Adjacent to the den is a dining room that can comfortably seat 2 to 10. Through the dining room, you can enter the large state of the art kitchen fully equipped with Bertazonni range, subzero refrigeration, a large wine cooler- a cook’s dream! The kitchen also has a large comfortable seating area and media center with cable television as well as laundry facilities. The shaker inspired powder room is off the kitchen.
Second Floor: The master bedroom (queen) is accessible from a back stairway leading from the kitchen. It features a sitting area with a media center with cable television along with an en-suite bathroom. The Waterworks bathroom has a large spa shower with his and her sinks.
The additional Queen, twin bedrooms may be accessible through the master suite or via the front stairs. The queen bedroom, a twin bedroom, and third-floor full share a full bathroom incorporating a separate WC, a luxurious, free-standing deep and large tub in front of a working fireplace and a walk-in spa shower with WaterWorks fixtures.
Third Floor: The third floor is accessed via an original stairway and hosts a sleeping loft with a cabin-bed (full)1. A ship's ladder leads to the window walk (rentals are contingent on the signature of an executed hold harmless agreement for the widow walk) which offers panoramic views of the town and harbor. This bedroom is not counted in the bedroom count. Stairs are steep and there is not a bathroom on the third floor.

Instructions to complete the agreement will be provided immediately after booking The Town of Nantucket or simply “Town” as many call it, is the epicenter of life on the island. Situated on the north side of the island around Nantucket Harbor, Town offers both natural beauty and historical charm. In the early 1800s, Nantucket was the whaling capital of the world. While the wharves and many structures in the commercial district were lost in the Great Fire of 1846, some still stand today and are thoughtfully preserved and accessible to the general public. Whether it is through tours of Nineteenth Century whaling captains’ homes, events at churches or the Athenaeum Library, or a visit to a museum, Town is steeped in history. Have you ever heard of Maria Mitchell, renowned astronomer and professor? How about Herman Melville’s Moby Dick? Surely you’ve read Nathaniel Philbrick’s In the Heart of the Sea, or seen the Hollywood blockbuster of the same name. Interestingly, Benjamin Franklin and Macy’s Department Store both have roots to Nantucket as well.
Restaurants, Shopping & Galleries
Along with historical charm, downtown Nantucket today is chock full of restaurants, shops, and galleries. A true gastronome’s paradise, Town offers all types of cuisine and levels of sophistication from A to Z. Whether you’re looking for Classic French, New American, Global, or something casual for the kids, you’re covered. In between meals, check out one of the many boutiques or art galleries as you stroll up and down narrow, beautifully landscaped cobblestoned streets. In the evening, there are many options for entertainment – whether it’s live music in a relaxed environment, or singing and dancing the night away in a swanky, lively spot.
Boating & Fishing
There are many active pursuits in Town, as well. Being located on the harbor, there are kayak, sailboat, and stand-up paddle board rentals. Take a walk down to Straight Wharf and reserve a sport-fishing charter or spend a day on a boat catching bass, bluefish, bonito, and maybe even see a few dolphins, whales, or sharks! There is also a Critter Cruise available for the kids.
Beaches & Biking
The Brant Point and Cliff areas are next to Town and offer several options for sunbathing at one of the north shore beaches. Also most of the bike paths are accessible from Town, making the rest of the island just a bike ride away!
