This is island living at its best. Having lived on several islands in the Aegean Sea, I know the experience of island living. I know how it feels to see the mainland in the distance while knowing you are not part of the mainland environment. You are in a separate, different world inducing an island state of mind. The rawness of this barrier island captures that sensation. On the island you can experience the intimacy of nature and the beauty of the shimmering Gulf of Mexico in its primal, unadulterated form. I am a birder. The island is a major stopping point for birds migrating back and forth from Latin America. I like to watch the herons, pelicans, cormorants and other sea and air creatures while enjoying the spacious balcony, using the powerful optics provided. Of course I also like the amenities of a quality resort, in an opulent setting, and we certainly have that here. On the island you witness the divine sense of nature in a pacifying setting without the unnecessary and distracting trappings of modernity and commercialism so prevalent on the mainland. The whole island is a bird sanctuary. Please use our high-power binoculars and scopes and our tripods. We have a great library focusing on birding, boating, the Gulf of Mexico, and regional wildlife and history.
