~Majestic-throated magpie-jays will come in the morning to feed if you leave them chopped up papaya or mango 🐦
Relax in the beauty of nature at this charming, rustic finca. Just minutes from the white sands of Playa Blanca and the dark sands of Playa Junquillal, this 4-bedroom home is the perfect retreat for your large group after a day of adventure. Enjoy the convenience of high speed internet, air conditioning, washer-dryer and a full kitchen while experiencing wildlife from the balcony where you can watch the howler monkeys, squirrels, and magpie blue jays that come to feed in the lush mango trees.
Casa Tres Picos is located 2 blocks from the ocean and situated on 2000 square meters (1/2 acre) of gated land. The home boasts two upstairs terraces, a downstairs patio and a carport as well. There is ample parking for at least 4 vehicles.
The upstairs features the great room which includes the living room, dining room and kitchen area. The kitchen is fully equipped with 2 refrigerators, an oven, toaster oven, toaster, rice cooker, blender, coffee maker, 5-gallon drinking water dispenser, pots and pans and everything you will need to prepare a great meal after a day at the beach!🏖️
Please Note: Casa Tres Picos is equipped with a spiral staircase, which is something to keep in mind for elderly guests. The staircase does have a railing.
Adjoining the great room is a large terrace that overlooks the backyard. It is only a few meters away from the mango tree where the howler monkeys love to feed. Laying in one of the handmade hammocks on the back terrace is a perfect way to watch the sun fall beyond the horizon after a day of adventure.
Both upstairs bedrooms are furnished with comfy queen size beds. They also both have en-suite bathrooms, direct access to the front balcony, and a keypad secured safe.
The two downstairs bedrooms each have two beds. One room has two double beds and the other room has a double bed and a single bed (These are the two bedrooms that showcase the murals). The two downstairs bedrooms share a full bathroom which is located downstairs, just off the foyer.
Every bedroom has an air conditioner and ceiling fan.
The exterior of the house is equipped with security cameras and solar lighting. The house also includes a standard size washer/dryer.
~Gerardo-The Best Caretaker in All of Guanacaste!~
You may see Gerardo caring for the outside of the property during your stay. Along with being a fantastic caretaker, Gerardo is a great resource for any Junquillal-related need you may have and he also happens to be one of the nicest people around. He has been caring for Tres Picos for many years and has lived in the Junquillal area all of his life. He lives only a block away and is almost always available if needed. He only speaks Spanish, so be prepared with a translation application if needed.
He and his wife Anna also own a fantastic little restaurant (soda) called La Ventana del Surfista. It is usually open from 10 a.m. through 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner. I love all the different types of casados and the quesadilla is tasty as well! Sometimes, they have a watermelon smoothie-type drink that is delicious!🍴
~Animals and Trees~
Hummingbirds enjoy the poinsettias that line the north side of the property, a wide variety of wildlife feed in the banana and mango trees in the yard, and you may see howler monkeys, squirrels, iguanas, and white-throated magpie-jays, as well as a number of other birds and insects enjoying the flora. The howler monkeys will feed in the mango tree and they also enjoy relaxing and sleeping in the two giant Guanacaste trees in the backyard. (The Guanacaste tree is the national tree of Costa Rica.)🐒
The white-throated magpie-jays will come almost every morning at around 7:00-8:00 AM. If you are interested in watching them have breakfast, they love chopped-up papaya in the feeder just at the front left of the outside part of the balcony. Different seasons bring different fruits and different animals. You are welcome to enjoy any fruit you are able to pick safely.
~Playa Junquillal~
This is the main beach where the turtle nesting takes place. There is also a children's playground with a turtle sculpture for “kids only” to play on. The park also has ample seating and tables. You can pull right up to the sand at this beach. Many locals and tourists come here to watch the sun fade into night…
~Turtle Nesting~
VerdiAzul Turtle Nesting-Contact information will be found within our welcome book. Turtle nesting activities happen on the main beach in Junquillal 🐢
~Whale Watching~
Whales can be seen cruising along the coastlines from July through April. Southern Humpback Whales arrive in Costa Rica beginning in July and ending in November. The Northern Humpback Whales migrate to Costa Rica starting December and typically ending in April. These mammals give birth and raise their young offspring in the warm waters, encouraging them to go closer to the shore than other areas throughout the world 🐳
While the California Humpbacks move down the Central American coastline singly or in groups of two to four the majority of the Pacific Whales are headed across the open ocean to Hawaii from their feeding grounds in Canadian and Alaskan waters. Even though the whales along the Pacific Coast represent only a small percent of the world population they’re relatively easy to spot because they congregate close to shore. Pacific Humpbacks swim in pods of about a dozen in the known calving areas of the shores of Costa Rica.
~Bioluminescence~
Playa Junquillal is known to have bioluminescence in its waters. Bioluminescence may appear to be a fairy-tale-like phenomenon but in fact, it is a chemical reaction in the cells of the living organisms within the water creating what is known as a living light.
While we see bioluminescence all year long, your bioluminescent experience can depend on the time of year as well as what phase the moon is in. The new moon cycles will offer more darkness and reflect less upon the waters in comparison to the full moon. The week surrounding the new moon is also a great time to see this wonder.
~The Murals~
The 2 murals in the downstairs bedrooms were painted in October of 2021 by Costa Rican-born, local artist. The artist’s IG page states “Living close to the ocean and mountains, and the fact that I practice surfing has influenced my technique and art style.”
~Puzzle Art~
The puzzles used as artwork in the house are handmade wooden puzzles by the Alfaro family with designs inspired by the nature of Costa Rica. These Costa Rican ecological solid wooden puzzles are handmade with 100% reforested Jaul wood from the Toro Amarillo area, which is why it is a product that collaborates with the ecology of the region 🧩
The Alfaro family comes from Sarchi which is a well-known tourist region because of its crafts, done for almost 3 generations.
~Handmade Furniture~
Much of the furniture was handmade on the property with locally sourced, abundant wood. The coffee table and desk are made of wood from Costa Rica’s national tree, the Guanacaste tree.
~Groceries~
The nearest grocery store is a leisurely 10-minute walk. Head to the main road and turn left. It's a few hundred meters ahead on the right side of the road. It’s called Super Junquillal. You’ll find all the staples there! If you’re fortunate, on your evening stroll for groceries, you may see thousands of fireflies as they float around the horses and cows in the pasture that lines the north side of the road (on the left side of the road when heading to the store)! There are also a few other larger grocery stores just a 3 minute drive away in Paraiso (the city that leads to the house) across from the futbol/soccer field.
~Fruit and Vegetable Truck~
A few fruit and vegetable trucks that come by the house during the week, our favorite comes by on Fridays (usually late morning). It is a large box truck with a speaker that calls out the items they are carrying that day as they slowly drive the streets. Just make sure you listen for them and then go out to the road and stop the truck as they drive by. They have quite a nice selection of fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables 🥭
~Recycling~
If you wish to recycle, you may walk to the recycling center located at the pin drop on the map below. If you take the street directly behind the house and turn right, it’s on the right side less than 100 meters up the road. They only accept glass, crushed plastic bottles and cans. There is also a recycling center at the main beach, Playa Junquillal (directions listed in “closest local beaches” section of the Welcome Book). Organic waste goes in the regular garbage ♻️
