The sunny Kona District is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters and rich cultural history, with notable landmarks like Huliheʻe Palace, Mokuʻaikaua Church, and Ahuʻena Heiau—just 8 miles south of Kona’s Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole. Kona is also renowned for world-class deep-sea fishing and hosts the prestigious International Billfish Tournament each August, as well as the iconic IRONMAN World Championship in October. The cooler upland slopes are home to the famous Kona coffee farms.
Daily activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing on the beach while watching spinner dolphins and Hawaiian sea turtles glide through the water. Along lively Ali‘i Drive, enjoy oceanfront dining, shopping, or watching the boats go by with a cocktail in hand.
At the southern end of Kailua-Kona lies Keauhou Bay, at the end of Kamehameha III Road—known as the birthplace of King Kamehameha III. This scenic bay is ideal for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and snorkeling, and is a popular spot for manta ray sightings and ocean excursions.
