Awesome week at a beautiful house deep in the Tall Prairie Grasses of KS. Heat and humidity stayed on us the 5 nights we were there, but the central air conditioning made all the exhausting summer elements go away. This home has everything we wanted. Well equipped to make a comfortable stay. Trains?? Right out the back door - didn't even notice them and when we did, loved it - really cool. Each morning we left for Emporia to compete in the 2016 World Disc Golf Championships. The drive back and forth was incredibly beautiful. Loved our stay.
This was one of my most favorite places I've ever stayed in. The decor was so charming! The attention to detail in the decorating made me want to totally redecorate my own home! It has a super cozy feel and flow. The beds were great quality (and I even had a down comforter in my room)! The kitchen was fully stocked (pans, dishes, microwave, glasses, silverware, storage, stove, full sized, etc...)
There are train tracks directly behind the house, with several trains coming through frequently. The trains were not a nuisance to our group, and I actually enjoyed it.
We would 100% stay here again and recommend it highly to others.
I agree with the other reviews that the house is very charming and nicely decorated, that's why I booked it. I'm afraid my stay was not at all comfortable, though. My first concern was the cobwebs and mouse trap in the pantry, so I took a good look around the house and found that it needed a good thorough deep-cleaning. The website stated that both bedrooms had window A/C units and that all the windows had screens. The window units had been removed and no screens put in their place. It was very warm, uncomfortably warm that night, with no option to open the bedroom window for increased airflow. The website also says that the railroad tracks are "nearby". This is a gross understatement, fellow travelers. The railroad tracks are just feet from the end of the backyard. Between the heat and the trains that run all night, I got absolutely no sleep. By 4am, I decided I would pack at daybreak and not stay the second night. I was also concerned about the wasps that were coming in through two windows that were not airtight and the side door into the house that could not be locked. I have stayed in a number of VRBO properties and my sense is that this owner or property manager is not serious about being in this business. I took two days off work and paid for two nights to stay at this property and was very disappointed.
My husband and I rented this home for a weekend getaway in October to unwind from the hectic life of school and work. The home was even cuter than the pictures on this site relayed. It had so many sweet touches and tasteful décor, so I LOVED that. It had a completely stocked kitchen of cookware and dishware so that was a great touch.
The only recommendation I have to the management, is to provide a little charcoal grill (Husband said he possibly saw a very old, rusty grill in the barn, but it didn't seem functional). We had brought food for grilling, but made do with the stove instead. Also, just a note to potential guests, there is no tv (which was great) but no radio/stereo either. We have some nice 'grooving' music we always play to set the tone for our weekend trips. Many people may not care, but if you prefer some nice music to float away with, make sure to bring a little boom-box or computer speakers. There is Wi-Fi (yay!) so we just synced up to that and used our laptop for music but hadn't thought to bring our speakers.
Otherwise it is a nice quiet place. The trains were active but no whistle-blowing so it wasn't intrusive, but rather kind of neat to have them there. There are neighbors, but we did not see or hear them.
Make sure to visit the Tallgrass Prairie Reserve, it was AMAZING. I love seeing the wild bison on this beautiful landscape. Very very cool.
It hurts to give Elaine's Prairie Home four stars because probably any other week of the year I'd hike it up to five. The place is exactly what it tells you it is: a little old frame home in a town that's barely a town. You can't get a Big Mac anywhere close or walk to the pool. But that wasn't a surprise. We knew that long before we pulled into Matfield Green. What we didn't count on--and should have--is the sheer power of the heat, lots of it, Death Valley-like heat, the kind of heat that shriveled crops up in a day during the dirty Thirties. That dear little place--it's beautifully decorated--simply isn't the place to be when the temps sky like they did during our long weekend there. Elaine's Prairie Home has wonderful air conditioners in both bedrooms--really good ones; but the rest of the house got hot. Really hot. So did we.
But it's a darling place, and it's in the middle of jaw-dropping landscapes so brightly emerald they'll take your breath away. I loved the region. The Flint Hills are simply immense. Nowhere else in the states is there anything like the tall-grass prairie all around Matfield Green. And right there in the middle is Elaine's Prairie Home, a place that clearly offers its love the region of the country where it sits so admirably.
It's a wonderful place, really--but not when it's hot.
This is a great historical house in a nice small town. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay in the Flint Hills. The house was exceptionally clean and much larger than expected. My wife and I had fun touring the back country roads and exploring the hills. The hosts gave us maps and information for exploring the area which we very much appreciated. They were super nice and fun to chat with. By the way, the trains that go by every once in a while are terrific, we really enjoyed them, and the house is so quiet you don’t even notice them, we slept great! Thanks for a wonderful visit!
