This was the second time we had stayed at Frontier Store House while we were in the Flint Hills for photo workshops. If the occasion arrises again we would look forward to staying there again. Next time we will know to turn on the hot water heater when we arrive.
My wife and I came for the Flames in the Flint Hills weekend. Our first choice, the Prairieside Cottage, was already booked, so we chose this. The property was nicely furnished and the kitchen is well-stocked. Both the upstairs and downstairs beds were a little firm for our taste. Upstairs jet tub is very nice; the downstairs shower is tight quarters and dark. There is a very nice sound system in the downstairs closet and the speakers placed throughout the downstairs sound great. There are some CDs, including some local bluegrass music worth checking out. If you like it, the CDs are available for sale in the gallery next door, where the property manager is nice and knowledgeable about the area. We ate dinner up the road at Ad Astra in Strong City, which I highly recommend. Matfield Green is very small town on 177 with no services. If you need any supplies, expect to drive to Cottonwood Falls where there's a Dollar General and other shops.
As others have mentioned, there's a very bright light from the railroad off next door which leaks into the downstairs bedroom. Fortunately, they have good light-blocking shades. Our biggest issue was the train noise, which kept me and my wife up until 3am on our first night. This isn't the soothing sound of trains in the distance. The tracks are right behind the house and every 20 minutes there's a low rumble which goes on all night. I even tried moving to the upstairs loft bedroom, which was not any better. We actually considered driving to Emporia, but we stuck it out! The second night, I popped in my earplugs and a Tylenol PM and slept better. If it weren't for the train noise, I'd stay here again, but it was pretty much a dealbreaker for us - you either love it or you hate it. Our only other issue was that we couldn't get the free wi-fi to work. The password is on the kitchen table, but we could never get connected.
Nice historic property, but if you even think the train noise might bother you, I'd look for other lodging in the area.
Our California family of 4 truly enjoyed staying in the historical home for two weeks. We loved the history of the home, along with the quiet town of Matfield Green, and the ability to travel wide and far to visit the many places of Kansas. We did some family research and were able to view one of the original farms an ancestor farmed in the 1800's--fun for us, and to visit the Orphan Train museum to learn more about another ancestor.
Some of our challenges in the home were learning to deal with the bugs--but fun for us, as it was a new experience; finding places to eat at, when coming home in the evening, as the small eating places in the towns usually close up early, and remembering to plan for a longer trip to go to the market! The scenery and driving over the many country roads, visiting quit and antique shops and just relaxing were highlights of the area. The home didn't have a blender, but we picked up a used one at a small store in our travels and we were able to make our smoothies. We left it for others to enjoy when they stay.
If you want to see Kansas, this is a wonderful place to stay! Thank you!
Three friends spent a lovely weekend at Frontier House. The house is beautiful and cozy and only had a couple of hiccups concerning the heat of the water and the kitchen water - but all was worked out. The caretaker came immediately and was so friendly. The trains that run behind the house lulled us to sleep every night. We spent both evenings behind on the prairie watching the sunset, drinking wine and admiring the wild mustangs. Cottonwood Falls Tall Grass Prairie held us all day Saturday in its grip - walking and identifying wild flowers, we found a collard lizard - the buffalo were testy so we avoided them! Delightful. Ate a wonderful dinner at Ad Astra in Strong City and sat on the porch swing back at the house and enjoyed rain storm. We will recommend to others and definitely are planning our next trip down. Thank for the calming effect it had on us.
We really lucked out finding this beautiful home for a fun, family weekend getaway! I actually called about another property in Matfield Green which wasn't available, but the manager told me she had just received a cancellation on this house. (Everything in Chase County was booked for some of the Flint Hills burns.) It was perfect for our family of two adults and two kiddos. Everything (and more) we might need was there and it was beyond comfortable. (Beds, bedding, pillows and plenty of towels - all were perfect.) The train tracks run right behind the property, but since there is not a crossing they don't blow their horns (unless the kids ran out and waved and then they got their own personal greeting!) The kids had such fun counting trains and the rumble was relaxing and never bothersome. Everything from the porch swing to the large "picnic" style table (perfect for puzzles), to the fantastic jet tub just added to the comfort and fun of the entire weekend. A heads up that there is a railroad building directly to the South that has some pretty bright lights which shine over to the house. The downstairs bedroom has great window coverings that didn't let any of the light shine in and otherwise it just made for some nice light to see walking around in the house after dark, so it didn't bother us, but just a heads up. There are so many great things to see and explore all within a very minimal driving distance (Chase County Courthouse, Tall grass Prairie National Preserve, and Ad Astra in Strong City is a must for dinner - just be sure and make a reservation if you can.) We found that the perfect place to watch the sun set and see the distant prairie burns was just a quick drive behind the house to the open range area. The cute gallery next door to the house has some amazing art and we left with a few little souvenirs to remind us of our great weekend in the Flint Hills. We will definitely go back and would highly recommend staying here. This was also our first experience finding a property through VRBO and found everything about the process to be accurate, easy and very helpful.
We had the most delightful time exploring the house and sitting on the porch swing watching the world go by. We recommend this place to those wanting a quiet step back into history. Love the sound system. Appreciated the 'basics' in the kitchen.
