The Loon Lodge
Nestled in the Marl Bay on Douglas Lake, the Loon Lodge is located near one of four Loon nests monitored by the University of Michigan Biological Station.
17 miles of undeveloped shoreline maintained by U of M on the 3,700 acre lake helps to create a peaceful place for wildlife and human visitors to rest.
Spend the day exploring the lake by kayak, canoe, or paddle board. Enjoy a good book by the lake or take a half mile walk to Bessey Nature Preserve where Lancaster Creek feeds into Douglas Lake.
By night, catch the Northern Lights or the Milky Way Galaxy from the dock while a fire crackles on the shore.
The Loon Lodge is a cozy 1940’s whole log cabin that has been updated & renovated while honoring it’s historical character.
There are two bedrooms (pony walls) each featuring a queen bed. There is also a sleeping loft with a full and twin bed, while a futon is available in the living room for extra sleeping.
A full kitchen, bathroom and living room finish the space, plus an enclosed porch on the lakeside for sipping your morning coffee.
The cabin is best for a couple or single family with kids. Please note that this property does not have Wi-Fi but does have excellent cell service for a hot spot.

The Loon Lodge is a place of retreat and adventure for our family. We run our family’s farm full-time in Mid-Michigan but our hearts live in the serene woods of Northern Michigan and the epic beauty of the Great Lakes. We are so grateful to share this gift with you!
When we first saw this cabin, we fell in love with its rustic and historic charm. The whole log walls and rafters transport you to a time when Northern Michigan's lakes were wild and undeveloped, and cabins like these were carved out and constructed of the very woods around them.
That's what makes this place so special to us! We love the rustic logs and simplicity of a time-old cabin, but more importantly - we love that with just a short drive this cabin allows us to strip away the incessant noise of day-to-day life and focus on spending quality time together as a family.
We only get 18 summers with our kids being "kids," what better way to make memories than around a campfire on a lake, enjoying the long days of Northern Michigan Summer.

Douglas Lake is a very quiet lake. With the University of Michigan owning over half of the shoreline, there is very little development compared to other lakes in the area - meaning there is plenty of wildlife.
We use our cabin as a getaway to escape the noise of daily life and enjoy the pristine nature that Douglas Lake has to offer. We regularly see and hear loons, as there is typically more loons on the lake than boats. Eagles also frequent our area of the lake as well as blue herons and beavers that swim out of the creek feeding Marl Bay. While we haven't seen a Black Bear up there yet, we have found bear tracks in the sand along the east shore of the lake.
Douglas Lake offers a great escape to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Northern Michigan nature, while still being just a 15 mile drive to the Straits of Mackinac.

Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig
We have done our best to honor this cabin's past by leaving as much of its original woodwork and character as it is. While so many of these small lakeside cabins are being torn down to make way for bigger, fancier lakefront properties, our dream is to preserve this little piece of Michigan's historic roots, and share our little hideaway with other like-minded families.
