The pebbly beach of Mgarr ix-Xini is the same bay where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have shot their most recent film, By the Sea.
The village of Xewkija (scheukiia): Xewkija is famous for its church simply known as 'the Rotunda', dedicated to St John the Baptist. Not only does it dominate the village, it dominates the entire island. The village has an eccentrically suburban air for an agricultural community. Men on ancient lilac-coloured Vespas roar noisily through the narrow twisting medieval streets wearing soup-bowl helmets and shot guns slung across their backs; a handful of people too old to work the fields sit beside their bamboo-slatted front doors awaiting the cool of the day, while tourists stare at their cathedral-sized church. The single most impressive feature is the dome, a 45,000-ton structure set on eight columns.
A short walk from the trullo leads down the valley of Mgarr ix-Xini. The swimming in the small fjord at the bottom of the steep single track is clean and suitable for children. Further out the waters are dark, deep and clear against the sheer cliff face offering excellent diving and snorkelling.
Trullo Gozitano is one of just 7 properties awarded ECO certification by Malta Tourism Authority in Gozo. The Eco certification is the national scheme for ensuring the environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural sustainability of tourist accommodation on the Maltese Islands and has been recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council as fully reflecting the GSTC criteria.
