Romantic Italian Castle at the Foot of the Alps, CIR code 00126600003

Ninth-century castle exclusively for guests and beautifully restored, with central heating and modern amenities. Rebuilt during the early twentieth century by General Cavaliere Fernando Pecco and the Broglio family, it was bought in 1929 by the family of the famous composer and musician Rosario Scalero as a home and school where he taught many of the greatest composers and musicians in the next generation, including Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, Nino Rota, and Gian Carlo Menotti. Just to the left of the beautiful entrance hall, which is decorated with a famous wraparound fresco of the castle's history, are the master's study and his pupils' conservatory, which, like the library on the floor above and the central living-room right next to it, are covered in rich, dark, original paneling, replicas of medieval windows and shutters, and geometric and vegetal frescoes on every ceiling and many of the walls. From the porch of the library and from the patio on which the master's study opens, you are just above the castle's carefully manicured gardens, which are sprinkled with semi-tropical palm and fruit trees, yet offer breathtaking views of Alpine mountains capped with snow in winter, and which lead to excellent hiking trails along the Via Francigena. As sheep bells softly ring in the distance, you can walk the same trails as pilgrims passing from Canterbury to Rome amid olive groves, vineyards, and buildings that often date back to the route's heyday in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Or you can enjoy conversation, board games, your favorite beverage, and/or a snack in a quiet niche of the gardens as you look upon the beautiful and friendly confines of Montestrutto village at the foot of the castle's hill, admire the intrepid scalers at the wall-climbing park on one of the hill's lower sides, or look across Dora Baltea River at the waterfalls on the opposite mountainside. With easy access to the best of Alpine skiing, the largest and most popular of Italy's many national parks, and countless ancient ruins, medieval castles, and churches of all periods, the fantasy is yours for the making in this medieval castle updated with wifi and the other necessities of modern life.

Incredible experience
I can only recommend the Montestrutto castle to anyone visiting the region. The castle is absolutely great, not only the building itself but also the park. The views are also unforgettable. Barbara, Moreno and Karl were always looking after making our stay the best possible experience, and they succeeded at it. The only bad part is when you have to leave. It’s so sad! I hope we can come back soon!

Castillo
Karl, Barbara, and Marino are magnificent hosts. The property is centrally located and they make coming up and down from the Castillo as easy as possible even though it’s a bit of a work out. We could not have asked for better hosts during our time in Aosta Valley! You can get dinner prepared, wine tours, zip lining, and hiking nearby. We will definitely be considering staying here again when we come back!

When I first came across this property for sale, I could hardly believe my luck! As a professor of the history of art and of architecture who has long specialized in the Middle Ages, the castle's ninth-century roots were fascinating enough. But when you throw in the fact that I also edit the major journal and the major book series on post-medieval responses to the Middle Ages, the castle became absolutely irresistible. For it's perhaps the finest Italian echo of northern neo-gothic architecture. From the massive tower rebuilt in the early twentieth century by Fernando Pecco, who was an Italian general known as the "father of Italy's modern fortifications," through the rest of the structure built in the 1920s by Vittorio Mesturino, who was perhaps Italy's most famous twentieth-century medievalist, to the famous painter Carlo Gaudina's frescoes from 1926, the castle may be the richest and most complete evidence for how the Middle Ages, particularly in northern Europe, were perceived in early twentieth-century Italy. Moreover, as a music lover, I can't help but also be entranced by the fact that from 1929 until his death in 1954, the castle was the vacation home and then the permanent home of Rosario Scalero, a world-famous violinist, composer, and teacher who hosted lessons at the castle for Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, George Walker, Nino Rota, Gian Carlo Menotti, and pretty much all other famous Italian musicians of the next generation or two. Nor can I forget the fact that two of his three daughters who stayed at the castle were among the earliest and most famous Italian translators and scholars of such literary lions as Virginia Woolf, Herman Hesse, and Thomas Mann. Every inch of this castle is a cultural treasure, and when you throw in the magnificent views, amazing food, and, above all, wonderful neighbors, my desire to share this bounty with you only barely outweighs my desire to live there year-round.

Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft

When I was first considering buying the castle, I visited its surroundings incognito the day before I was scheduled to meet the real-estate agent. As I walked into the village of Montestrutto at the base of the castle hill, a workman struggling to load a huge box into the back of a truck saw me out of the corner of his eye, turned his head, and, with a huge smile, wished me "Buongiorno!" From that moment on, I was hooked on the castle and its environs. Sure, the views to and from the property are gorgeous. Who wouldn't love to gaze past palm trees at snow-capped mountains adorned with soft mists and flowing or frozen waterfalls? And, sure, the area offers terrific skiing, hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, parasailing, rock climbing, horse riding, etc. And, sure, you can't throw a stone without hitting a medieval, Renaissance, or Baroque church, castle, tower, villa, etc. And, sure, the food and wine represent a beautiful (and insanely economical!) blend of the best Germany, France, Switzerland, and, of course, northern Italy have to offer. But it's the local people that make this place a paradise in my eyes. While in almost every way they're no less diverse and perhaps even more so than anywhere else in Italy, they're wonderfully consistent in their kindness, generosity, gentility, and genuineness, even for such a famously hospitable country as Il Bel Paese. From the first moment my family and I set foot in Montestrutto and, indeed, in the Canavese region, we have always felt welcome, and, as much as we love everything else about the castle and its setting, it's the people that keep us coming back at least twice a year.

Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig

Though there aren't many other castles available for rent through this website, there are some. And many of those other castles have interesting origins, attractive grounds, and at least some modern amenities. But few have a history as star-studded as this castle, which was founded to protect a Benedictine abbey, was co-opted by the Visconti and then Savoy families, destroyed by Napoleon, rebuilt by the Italian army's "father of modern fortifications," expanded in the 1920s by Italy's most famous medievalist architect, frescoed by the most famous muralist in northern Italy, bought by Italy's most famous and successful music teacher, visited by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, Nino Rota, Gian Carlo Menotti, and countless other famous musicians, and inherited by two of Italy's most famous translators. And few of those other castles have gardens as lush, extensive, diverse, and manicured as this one. Nor do many of them have as many modern amenities, from extensive indoor plumbing and electricity through wifi, a microwave oven, a gas stove, a dishwasher, two refrigerators, a washing machine, and a clothes dryer. And perhaps no other castles for rent on this website or any other have close-up views of the Alps from a tropical garden, offer an internationally renowned climbing park, an even more famous gelateria, and northwestern Italy's best pizza just a five-minute walk away, or offer world-class hiking, skiing, kayaking, canoeing, parasailing, horse riding, and countless other outdoor activities within a thirty-minute, and sometimes much less, drive. Nor, I think can any other rental castles offer a mere one-hour drive to the bounties of France to the west, Switzerland to the north, Milan to the east, and Turin to the south. But, as I've indicated elsewhere on this website, perhaps the most wonderful singularity of this property is its true treasure: the kindness, generosity, genuineness, and hospitality of its neighbors.
