Though there aren't many other castles available for rent through this website, there are some. And many of those other castles have interesting origins, attractive grounds, and at least some modern amenities. But few have a history as star-studded as this castle, which was founded to protect a Benedictine abbey, was co-opted by the Visconti and then Savoy families, destroyed by Napoleon, rebuilt by the Italian army's "father of modern fortifications," expanded in the 1920s by Italy's most famous medievalist architect, frescoed by the most famous muralist in northern Italy, bought by Italy's most famous and successful music teacher, visited by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, Nino Rota, Gian Carlo Menotti, and countless other famous musicians, and inherited by two of Italy's most famous translators. And few of those other castles have gardens as lush, extensive, diverse, and manicured as this one. Nor do many of them have as many modern amenities, from extensive indoor plumbing and electricity through wifi, a microwave oven, a gas stove, a dishwasher, two refrigerators, a washing machine, and a clothes dryer. And perhaps no other castles for rent on this website or any other have close-up views of the Alps from a tropical garden, offer an internationally renowned climbing park, an even more famous gelateria, and northwestern Italy's best pizza just a five-minute walk away, or offer world-class hiking, skiing, kayaking, canoeing, parasailing, horse riding, and countless other outdoor activities within a thirty-minute, and sometimes much less, drive. Nor, I think can any other rental castles offer a mere one-hour drive to the bounties of France to the west, Switzerland to the north, Milan to the east, and Turin to the south. But, as I've indicated elsewhere on this website, perhaps the most wonderful singularity of this property is its true treasure: the kindness, generosity, genuineness, and hospitality of its neighbors.
