## Emplacement
Tarnos, the fourth largest city in the Landes and an important industrial port, is located at the mouth of the Adour river, at the gateway to the Basque Country. It is located at the limits of the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, not far from Bayonne, Capbreton, Biarritz and the Atlantic coasts. If we know quite poorly the origins of Tarnos, we know however that the city was already present in the Gallo-Roman era under the name of Tarinus. Occupied in the 12th century by the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the city was notably a place of passage for the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle who took the coastal path. The appearance of the railway in the 19th century and the improvement of maritime services at the same time allowed Tarnos to develop, particularly with the creation of a steel factory.
Always very active economically, the town is also appreciated by tourists thanks to the charm of its landscapes and its architectural heritage. Tarnos beach is bordered by the largest dune in Europe.
