This property is definitely a good value considering it's overlooking the ocean and includes a great breakfast! Having the common room with extra items in the fridge was a plus. Pool was a bit run down and could use some cleaning up - did not match pictures. Can't beat the amazing views of the ocean! Good location near Hilo.

Fantastic location right on the water and close to town! Loved the daily breakfasts! Small hotel (four spaces?) that made it easy to connect with other travelers. Would definitely stay here again.

A Warm Room with a View

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was more than happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The room was very clean, was small, had a great view and was in a quiet neighborhood. The room was very hot without air conditioning. Although we knew it didn't have air conditioning, we didn't realize how hot it would be in such a tropical environment - even with the fans provided. The host provided great fruit and boiled eggs for breakfast each morning. Parking was provided and was as described, but to clarify, it is very tight and would be really difficult to park a full-sized vehicle.

Great ocean view, clear check-in instructions, clean room, lots of great fruit for breakfast but small room and no air conditioning (but included fans) in an environment that is very hot and humid. If you don't mind no AC in such a hot environment, it's a good room.

This place really was a 5 star experience. The views were unreal and the host takes good care of you. They would leave a plate of fruits and muffins or whatever else for breakfast every day, it was great!

The location of the room is amazing as it directly faces the ocean and they provide wholesome breakfast which is a nice touch! But there are some logistical issues with the property: 1. the 4 car parking space is the most uncomfortable lot I have ever encountered. It’s like someone drew the parking lot on a paper and forgot to take into consideration the ground reality. 2. The room doesn’t have any AC which could become an issue during hotter days. 3. There are a lot (a lot) of stairs to get to the rooms, so not accessible friendly at all! 4. If you’re staying in one of the farther rooms, there is no WiFi signal in those rooms, despite the property claiming it offers WiFi. 5. This property is part of larger Rentals and the only form of communication is via text but you never know with whom you’re chatting. They’re pretty responsive but it just felt weird! Overall the staff is friendly, service is good but wouldn’t really recommend staying here if you have other options.

Great location for surfers as there is a view of the break. Reaching the break requires a car, though it's close enough to see waves and those riding them. The room was clean. Breakfast was yummy and shifted to meet dietary issues. Place is close to town for shopping and restaurants. We'll be back. This room is the smallest and we'll likely choose bigger for next time.

Great view, ok pool, wouldn’t revisit.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Small room & lanai. Right on the ocean, great views. Parking tight & difficult. Many steps up & down. No AC. The screen door was rusted shut, forced it open about 15 inches. No one on sight to manage, only cleanup crew. Very little privacy. Made the best of it, wouldn’t go back.

Mahalo for your review. We're so sorry that Hale Kai didn't meet your expectations. The parking, steps and no AC are all outlined in the listing and guest reviews. AC is very rare in our mild climate, and opening windows and turning on ceiling fans is usually all that's needed for perfect temps. The screen doors do open - they just require a bit of elbow grease ;-) Like most vacation rentals, there is no on-site staff, but our office is 5 minutes away in downtown Hilo, and our staff is just a call, text or email away if you have any questions or need assistance. My husband and I spent 2 nights in early March in this lovely room which was part of a large home overlooking the ocean. We were pleasantly surprised with fresh breakfast items for every morning and watched whales spouting from our terrace. Amazing.

I loved the location and the view from our room. Whale watching was my favorite part of the stay. The room was not bad. There were not enough towels for 2 people. The hair conditioner was plugged up. They did bring a bring a bottle of condtioner. What I didnt like was the bent sliding door that wouldnt close or lock. Lots of ants got into out pizza on the inside table. The internet would not work and was very bad most of our stay. On the upside we were compted one night.. The pool was cleaned the day we were leaving. Parking was difficult on the hill for an SUV. The really good for handicapped person on oxygen or wherlchair due to the steps to get to the room. They do mention steps on the advertisement. The management company did try very hard to fix the issues we had. Even with all the problems I would stay at this location again.

You are paying for the ocean view! No AC!

Positives- Beautiful location and ocean view. Well kept property! Clean! Mini fridge in room was stocked daily with muffins, fruit, eggs and yogurt. Coffee supplied in room was very good. Negatives- I’m sure I overlooked the fact that this place did not have AC, so my fault…but wow was it brutal! We slept with door open and fan.. top sheet, the sound of wind woke us up all night every night. Pillows were really flat and bed extremely soft. My husband is basically a professional driver, and he was surprised how difficult the parking was. 1 spot at a very tight angel that you have to do a 3 point turn to get in and out of on a very steep incline. I never reached out to property manager as we were on the go everyday! But met upon arrival room attendant and she was very friendly! We wouldn’t stay here again only due to no AC.

Like most places in East Hawaii, there is not AC since temps here rarely climb above 83 degrees and night time lows are in the 60s. Open windows and fans act as air-conditioning in our mild environment :-) Many guests love falling asleep to the sound of the ocean just outside, but it can be loud for those who are sensitive to that sort of thing. The parking lot is tight and can be inconvenient. We would change it if we could! We have hosted thousands of guests without any major parking lot incidents - it does take extra care, though, as you mentioned. Take care, and safe travels! Perfect for couples. Ocean front unit. Beautiful way to see the amazing Hilo sunrise. They provided fresh fruit, coffee, muffins and snack bar. My husband and I enjoyed our visit to Hilo. Very safe neighborhood. We got dinner to go and had our dinner in our oceanfront unit.

Mahalo for your review, Ellie! The hot tub was decommissioned back in January of 2024 when it needed repair and the owners learned that parts were no longer available for this model. When the original hot tub was installed, the area was less developed and the owners were able to maneuver the hot tub into place. They tried to get a new one when this one died, but the cliffside location and private property on both sides made this impossible. The hot tub was removed as an amenity from all of our advertising at the beginning of the year. Reviews are the only place it's mentioned now, and unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it since we are not allowed to edit or remove reviews on any site. We're so happy that you enjoyed your stay even with the disappointment, and we hope you'll keep us in mind if your travels bring you back to Hilo!
