## Emplacement

With its 3 kilometres of ramparts and 52 towers, the upper town of Carcassonne, on the right bank of the River Aude, is the largest fortified city in Europe! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the famous and impressive medieval city of Aude, admirably restored in the 19th century by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-DucCarcassonne is one of France's most visited destinations. If you're a lover of the city's heritage and old stones, you're in for a treat as you explore Carcassonne's built treasures... The majestic Gallo-Roman and medieval fortifications that encircle the city, the imposing Narbonnaise gateway flanked by two high spur towers, the 12th-century château comtal built under the Trencavel dynasty, which today houses a lapidary museum, the basilica of Saint-Nazaire, with its Gothic statues and splendid 13th and 14th century stained glass windows, and the Promenade des Lices, nestling between the city's two walls, are all testimonies to the past that are worth a stroll. The charming Place Marcou, with its shady café terraces, and the picturesque streets dotted with souvenir and craft stalls, also punctuate the itinerary.
