When you stay at the 8 Mile House, you will enjoy a sense of old California serenity with all of the modern comforts you could want, including four historically themed guest rooms, a scenic covered porch and a large outdoor patio, dining table and barbecue. The standalone party barn is great for watching the game, serving up drinks and hanging out! Elements of the original 19th-century structure are found in nearly every aspect of the property, while apple trees, pomegranate, persimmon trees and grapevines provide a timeless ambiance that is rooted in the ranch’s agricultural heritage. The home sits on 3 acres, surrounded by hiking and biking trails located 5 minutes away.
Built by the Bean brothers in 1877, this home is exactly eight miles from the mission town of San Luis Obispo—a meaningful distance at the time of its creation. Located at the north base of the steep Cuesta Grade on the original El Camino Real, the home was used as a hotel for travelers making their way up or down the grade. The travelers could park their heavily loaded wagons, seek overnight lodging and even rent extra teams of horses for their journey across the grade.
Today, the 8 Mile House stands as a testament to Santa Margarita Ranch's tradition of “early California rancho hospitality.” Originally settled by Franciscan missionaries in the late 1700s, Santa Margarita Ranch is still one of California’s oldest continuously operated cattle ranches—and is today best known as the home of Ancient Peaks Winery.
The 8 Mile House ultimately reflects a love of history and a joy in sharing the ranch with others—a passion that is evident in all of the little details that make this place so special. Located less than 20 minutes from Shell or Avila Beach, and Santa Margarita Lake (a great fishing spot), 5 minutes from wine tasting/zip ling and only 15 minutes from Downtown San Luis Obispo. Great little house. Plenty of room for a family or 4 couples on vacation. Beautiful kitchen with everything we needed to make breakfast before we ventured out and meals when we returned. The peacocks were a pleasant addition, greeting us every morning and afternoon.Close to the railroad line which was concerning at first. However, we only saw 3 trains during the 5 days we were at the house and they drove by slowly making it more of a quaint experience.We appreciated the host agent reaching out the morning before check-in to make sure we were all set for our stay. I would recommend visiting the Ancient Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita (house owners) for lunch and a tasting. The wines are great.

I have to state I was shocked at the location. If I had known that there was a home on the property that was like a real junk yard I would have never rented this home. There were 7 of us in total. All of us agreed we would not have choose this place had we known.

We're always caught off guard when a guest we don't let cancel at the last minute then leaves us a bad review. The neighbor's property you mention is on the same access road, but is not part of the rental property, as we explained prior to your arrival. Unless one were specifically looking for it, it is far enough away that it has not been a focal point for other guests at our property. We would have been happy to help with anything noticed during your stay, had we been alerted. We're so glad we were able to provide early check-in this time and sorry you didn't enjoy your stay more.

a week at a VRBO
We had a very nice time at this property. There were only two issues that was a concern, First turning off the highway and getting back on the highway was a little concerning. It seemed a little dangerous. The other problem was they advertized a washer and dryer and we were counting on those because there were 8 of us getting ready for our sons wedding. and we had a lot of clothes that needed unwrinkeled. The dryer did not work at all. they said that they ordered a knew one, so they knew it was broke but never metioned it, They did allow us to use the other units dryer but it was very inconvenient , down the way a bit.

The 8 Mile House was a wonderful respite from the heat and hustle and bustle for our family. While the pictures are beautiful, they don't do the property justice. We especially enjoyed the well-appointed kitchen which gave us plenty of room to spread out and converse while enjoying food and drink. The property owner had thought of many extras, including paper towel, dish soap, tin-foil, and even a generous amount of coffee. There were many dishes, plenty of wine glasses, and the knives were even sharp (we had brought our own just in case)! Other amenities were better than described (not pictured in the Airbnb photos is that there is now a gas BBQ as well as charcoal grill and fire pit). We also appreciated the very well laid out instructions on the wall (there is a digital plaque), which included ideas for attractions/restaurants in the area. Waking up to the peacocks in the morning was something my son especially enjoyed. The porch was a favorite for our family to sit outside and enjoy the breeze. The barn/wine bar was a hit with the adults, as some of us enjoyed going to bed early and others could enjoy themselves with a beverage and conversation, without the risk of disturbing anyone. Overall, we were extremely impressed and hopefully we’ll return soon.

We were blown away by this property. A true gem 8 miles from SLO — it never took us more than 15 minutes to get to town, and yet you're far enough from the city that we were able to watch the shooting stars of the Perseid meteor shower at night. Very clean and organized, with all the amenities you'll need, and then some. More than worth it for a family or group. The road noise is very noticeable when you're sitting outside, but barely audible inside the house.

The house exceeded our expectations. It was very meticulously appointed and you can tell that the owners took great care in every detail. Every morning we were greeted by turkeys, peacocks, and hummingbirds. The house was very spacious with plenty of seating and was very clean throughout. Beds and linens were very comfortable. A tad hard to find, for the timid driver, but well worth it. The provided coordinates are a must for mapping the house for directions. Quite noisy on the outside back-patio due to the nearby 101 freeway, but very quiet inside. No trains came by in the evening, and we were away most times during the day, so there was not much bother from the nearby train tracks. All in all, it was very comfortable and quaint, and we can't wait to return.

Excellent traditional California Home. Truly historical landmark.
Very clean and the grounds were well kept. Water pressure was a bit low but not unbearable. Please remove incorrect address on check-in instructions {don’t type in Old US101} and you must use Google Map only.. when navigating there. Exiting highway needs to be done carefully if traveling North bound. It’s easy to circle back at the next exit if you miss your turn. We recommend darker curtains for clients wanting to sleep past 6 AM. The Peacock’s were beautiful but a bit noisy in the early hours. The Family Loved it.

A hideaway in heaven
This home was perfect for our family. The house is clean and beautiful inside and out. We had plenty of space to enjoy out time together. The beds were extremely comfortable and the amenities were excellent! The property is relaxing, serene, and calming. We loved watching the peacocks, bobcat, and a few chipmunks roaming the land. Checking in and out was a smooth and easy process. Communication from management was superb! We highly recommend the 8 mile house. We will definitely reserve this home for future stays in the area. The 8 Mile House was an absolutely perfect stay for our group getaway. The house is secluded within driving distance of many points of interest. It was clean, had all that we needed to feel comfortable, and was spacious for our group of 7. What a lovely escape! The property is very clean and relaxing. The management company was friendly and helpful (we always find it better to book directly with the agency instead of the online portals).The landscaping and grounds are so well done... Maybe they are expanding soon? We enjoyed relaxing on the porch and watching all of the wild life... Wild turkeys, peacocks, lizards, salamanders, hawks, humming birds, cows, horses... The house offers a great mix of new and old... There is a queen room down stairs with a bathroom (+tub) and 1 king and 2 queen rooms upstairs sharing 1 bathroom (shower only). We never heard a train :) Although the highway is nearby, the lull of that with the fountain we not an issue. It is a great rental if you are exploring the area and just as great if you don't want to leave. Highly recommended.

A beautiful home, clean, well maintained, and updated. Lovely landscaping, tranquil water fountain, happy birds and peacocks welcomed us upon arrival. Great comfy beds and pillows. The location offers great privacy. It is next to the 101 freeway, so there is some road noise but not an issue for us. The access road entering/exiting to get to this house is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared, and ready- cars zipping downhill fast. Super helpful to enter the GPS Location Coordinates in Google Maps to know exactly when to turn. Overall a great and comfortable stay for our family. A memorable place!

We also all agreed that the beds and sheets were really comfortable. This place was more than enough to accommodate all 3 couples and 2 kids.
