we took our daughter and 2 grandchildren for a short vacation. Accommodations were great. but the real attraction is the location and the owners. Firstly there is a great tree house / look out that my grand kids loved. they ate and read up there. the kids can wander the entire VERY large property and explore. There is a canoe and a bunch of kayaks. We went canoeing and kayaking on the Chesapeake. There is plenty of wild life to observe that the kids were constantly entertained. Butterfly's, river otter's, tree frogs, turtles, eagles...
In addition to all this you are about 35 minute ride to DC and all it has to offer. I would highly suggest discussing your DC plans with the owners. Their advice was invaluable.
If all this is not enough the owners John & Carrie are the nicest and most interesting people. They are warm and welcoming. I very much enjoyed our evenings sitting outside overlooking the water as the sun is going down and talking with them. I also loved Carries art "journal", thanks for sharing. Needless to say I would highly recommend this to any nature lover who is looking for a great vacation.
Our family of 5 (kids ages 0-7) just had a fabulous long weekend here. The cottage was perfect and just as we expected from the listing. The owner was helpful and kind and responded to communication quickly. We spent our weekend exploring the river and marsh with the canoe and kayaks and we all had a blast finding shells, watching birds and swimming. The kitchen was well-equipped and the beds were comfortable. It was a very hot weekend and the AC in the cottage had a hard time keeping up so we were a little toasty at night but otherwise no big complaints. We would definitely stay here again!
We had a wonderful and comfortable stay while touring DC. My girls absolutely loved the canoes and kayaks. We spent many hours paddling and swimming. The cottage is about 40 minutes drive to the nearest metro station. It is also within about 5 miles of small local restaurants, two groceries, CVS, and fast food. The cottage is rustic, but very comfortable. The hosts are very friendly, accommodating, and respectful of your privacy. I would recommend this rental for anyone that likes small town and/or country living. I felt that the rate charged was very reasonable and a great value. I didn't list 5 stars because of people that may expect a hotel like experience. This is more like staying at your friend's country lake house.
What a hidden gem! We had a great time during our stay at Fenwick Cottage. If you're looking to get away and spend some quality time experiencing nature and wonderful waterfront views, do yourself a favor and stay here! John and Carrie were excellent hosts and made sure our time there was comfortable - including providing a nice meal for us the first night of our stay. The cottage has everything you need, and is a quick 40-minute drive from downtown DC.
My boyfriend and I stayed in J & C's wonderful cottage over the 4th of July weekend a couple years ago and absolutely loved it. The hosts are some of the best people you could ever hope to meet. The location is wonderfully close to DC, making it a convenient weekend escape from the city. While we were there, we took advantage of the kayaks supplied to explore the nearby nature preserve. It was beautiful, relaxing weekend and exactly the escape we both needed. Thank you!
What is there to say about this place that hasn’t already been said in the comments! What a beautiful setting! Wildlife all around: Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Herons, Geese, Fish, Frogs, Butterflies, Dragonflies, the list just goes on.
The cottage is perfect! The upgrades to what is obviously a very old house make so much more than just a cottage; it truly is a home away from home.
We used Fenwick Cottage as our home base for a scheduled vacation to Washington DC. After looking at countless $300 a night hotels, this was a no brainer. However our expectations were not even close to the real life experience we had for a week at Fenwick. Just 30 minutes to our nations capitol but feeling like you’re a million miles away is perhaps the best component of this cottage and setting if you’re planning on visiting DC.
John & Carrie are most gracious hosts. They are there for advise or help with any issue, but also have a great deal of respect for your privacy. An invitation to Happy Hour with them and their neighbors after a long day of work (for them, not us) was a welcome end to our day as well on the evenings we were available.
Since this paradise is an easy ride from anywhere, there is so much to do if you can tear yourself away from the cottage in the morning. Washington DC, Mount Vernon, a Medieval Dinner Theater, and Potomac Speedway were the places we visited while we stayed at Fenwick Cottage.
If you visit, read the history of the area in the red binder provided by John and Carrie. It is rich with history of the area as well as information on attractions, fishing, local wildlife and even a set of directions to DC is provided in the “Red Book.”
We will most definitely be back next year!
