The Neighborhood:
Everything you need is within walking distance from the apartment! Here are some suggestions for things to see and do on your visit to Auckland:
Sky Tower – The tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere, offering 360-degree panoramic views of Auckland and beyond. You can dine at the revolving restaurant, Orbit 360, or if you're feeling adventurous, try the SkyWalk (a walk around the outer rim of the tower) or the SkyJump, a controlled freefall from 192 meters above the ground.
Viaduct Harbour – A vibrant waterfront area with a fantastic selection of restaurants, bars, and cafes. It's a perfect spot for an evening stroll along the marina, or for enjoying some fresh seafood while watching the yachts. During weekends, the area comes alive with events and nightlife. It’s also the starting point for harbor cruises.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki – This impressive gallery houses more than 15,000 artworks, ranging from contemporary pieces to historical collections of New Zealand and international art. The architecture of the gallery itself is stunning, blending heritage and modern design, and the gallery frequently hosts special exhibitions and interactive events.
Britomart Precinct – Known for its chic, urban vibe, Britomart is home to boutique shopping, high-end fashion, and a wide range of eateries and bars. You’ll find designer stores like Trelise Cooper and Karen Walker, as well as cozy cafes and fine dining options. The precinct also often hosts outdoor events, including markets, pop-up shops, and live music.
Albert Park – A peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, Albert Park is a beautifully landscaped garden with historical monuments, fountains, and walking paths. It’s the perfect spot to take a break from the city’s hustle, enjoy a picnic, or relax among the flowers. The park also features Albert Park House, which showcases the park's history.
Ferry Building & Auckland Ferry Terminal – This historic waterfront building serves as a gateway to some of Auckland’s best day trips. From here, you can take ferries to Waiheke Island, famous for its vineyards and beaches, or to Devonport, a charming seaside village with boutique shops, cafes, and a rich maritime history. The terminal itself is a great place to watch the harbor's bustling activity.
Aotea Square – The city's largest open-air venue, Aotea Square is a cultural hub surrounded by theatres, art spaces, and the Auckland Town Hall. It regularly hosts outdoor events such as concerts, festivals, and art installations. During winter, the square is transformed into an ice-skating rink, and in summer, it’s a popular spot for open-air markets and performances.
Queen Street Shopping – As Auckland’s premier shopping destination, Queen Street offers something for everyone, from luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci to affordable high-street retailers like H&M and Zara. The historic Smith & Caughey's department store is a must-visit for its elegant displays and range of local products. You’ll also find local boutiques and souvenir shops.
Civic Theatre – Built in 1929, this historic theater is a stunning example of atmospheric design, with its Indian-inspired interior and starry-sky ceiling. It’s a great place to catch a movie, musical, or live performance. The theater regularly hosts big-name international shows, making it a cultural gem in the heart of Queen Street.
New Zealand Maritime Museum – Located at the Viaduct Harbour, this museum delves into New Zealand’s rich maritime history. Explore exhibits on Maori voyaging, the country’s shipbuilding heritage, and even go on a heritage sailing experience. It’s a hands-on, educational destination for visitors interested in the sea and New Zealand’s relationship with it.
