The review from the guest is entirely inaccurate. There were a few ants in one cupboard, probably because there were some crumbs that weren't noticed during the cleanup, that was it! When they called me to let me know, I came over and saw a few ants on that one shelf but I did not see ants anywhere else (I took photos). After wiping the shelf I put out traps regardless to satisfy the guests. I then asked the previous guests if they saw ants. They did not. Once these guests left I took more photos (of no ants). I asked the following guests if they saw any ants, and they said no. The reality is, these guests were looking for a free vacation. We had a massive thunderstorm with tornedo warnings just before they arrived and we lost power on the street. As a diligent host I offered to put them in a hotel for the night. They agreed and I put them in a 5-star hotel overlooking Niagara Falls. The gesture was twice the cost of what they were paying me per night. I was okay with that because I wanted to make the guests happy. I suppose I should have just cancelled the reservation, because as soon as they checked in they complained about ants and tried to get me to agree to a huge discount, despite the fact that I had already lost a tremendous amount of money on the rental (5 nights). To be fair, when they complained about the ants I asked them if they wanted to cancel because I knew this was not going to be a good rental. I explained the VRBO could find them an alternate rental if they were not happy. They said they wished to stay. So I don't know what to say here. Yes, they asked me for a discount. Yes, they tried to get a refund through VRBO. Yes, they stayed for the duration of their stay. Yes, they happily accepted the 5-star hotel. Some rentals are great (truthfully the vast majority of them are). Some are just not.
