Awesome

The Outer Banks Escape is perfect. Everything is provided and the house is very clean and relaxing. Amy is the greatest. She makes you feel as if you have known her forever. This is our second year here and we are planning on coming back next year. It's also great for bringing your pets. Definitely a place to relax without any complaints.

Nice cottage to relax and enjoy the beach

Amy is one of the nicest owners we have rented from. The cottage is just the right size for a small family and we must take our little casey(shih tzu). You don't need anything to bring except yourself and buy your food. She supplies everything else. I hope to stay again next year and maybe again sooner.. Quiet beach cottage

We stayed at Gidget's dream with our two dogs. It is exactly as it appears in the pictures. The crosswalk to the beach access is only two houses away, and in October the beach was mostly empty. The neighborhood waa quiet, and you can see and hear the oacan from the house. We have done many vacation rentals in multiple states, and this was by far the best equipped kitchen we have ever encountered despite a small size. The owner is responsive whenever we contacted her.

The cottage was in a great location and was right across the street from the beach access. Everything that was needed was provided by Amy and was in the cottage. Thank you again for the hospitality! I will definitely stay here again if I am in the area.

New Year's Getaway

My wife and our four legged girls stayed here the week after Christmas into New Year's. Great house and perfect location in Kitty Hawk. We are truly grateful for dog-loving property owners and will definitely be back. This is a perfect time of year to go to the OBX but I hope no one else books this week! Amy is great to work with and we thank you very, very much for a wonderful stay. We had only one problem... we didn't book the 5th night when we should have! Thank you for letting us put a check in the mail for one more day. It was hard to leave. :)

Amazing!

We just returned from a fun weekend at the Escape cottage. Amy is amazing and her attention to detail, from cleanliness to decor, made our first trip to the OBX memorable. The cottage is the perfect size for a couple and two dogs. Our pups loved the gated front porch and watching the waves across the way. The book selection and DVD choices are extensive! We would have loved to peruse and leaf through had we booked a full week or two. I could see this as a great colder-weather trip (as well as spring/summer/fall) with the full room heaters, a blanket for the front porch, grabbing a good book from the travel collection and a cup of hot chocolate and sitting on the porch listening to the waves (jumping in the hot tub as needed). I normally would not have thought of a beach trip in cooler weather but seeing what Amy has available - this would be a great winter weather getaway too. I absolutely loved chatting with Amy at check-in. I am so glad we had the opportunity to meet her. I could have chatted for hours just picking her brain on travel tips! :) Thank you, Amy, for sharing your beautiful home with us and our furry boys!

Perfect

Thank you so much for sharing your sweet sea home with us and our two furs. We all had a wonderful time. The bed slept like a dream. The kitchen is very well stocked for anything you may want to cook. This little bit of Heaven was just what the doctor ordered, and we were able to visit with the kids and g-baby, and have quiet time too. PERFECT! We hope to be back sooner.

Great Location - Issues with house and Owner

We chose this house and location for a babymoon - when we first arrived, we were very excited about the location. Literally just a few steps to the beach which was amazing. But then the issues started... and it was extremely difficult to get a hold of the owner. We realized that the Air Conditioning was broken and there were signs telling us not to turn them on. I was 32 weeks pregnant and we also brought our two dogs so it was getting very warm in the house. The listing for the house clearly states there is A/C so we were frustrated to find out that it was broken. We then were unable to connect to the wifi. We both brought our laptops with us to check in on some work details and were unable to log on. We finally got a hold of Amy later that evening and she made a few phone calls and we were able to use the neighbor's wifi. She said she would call back the next day about the A/C. We hadn't heard from her by late afternoon the next day and it was getting very hot so I finally got a hold of her and she told me she had window units in her shed that we could install or she could arrange for someone to come to the house. We didn't want to be inconvenienced waiting for someone to arrive and my husband has installed them before so we told her we would handle it. She was very nice and offered to give us some of our money back for the inconvenience. The window units worked great and everything was fine with the A/C from there on out. But then we realized that the dryer did not work - it heated up but did not spin so it was not able to be used and I texted her twice regarding that and never heard back. On our last night there, we discovered a little hole in the backsplash in the kitchen and tons of ants were coming out of it. I immediately alerted her of this, as well. When I called her on our way home, she said she had a check she was putting in the mail for me that day. It has been 6 weeks and I have yet to see a check from her and I have also tried to get a hold of her numerous times and she will not respond. It's frustrating because we were hoping for a nice, relaxing week away before our little one arrives but we had so many problems and now we can't get any money back like we were promised. The house is in a great location but I feel it needs some upgrades and some TLC.

Wonderful!

My husband and I stayed there for anniversary and we enjoyed it so much. Glad that Amy's place is super dog friendly! It was just the right size for us and easy access to the beach and tons of videos to keep us occupied at night since we went during the off-season. We highly recommend and would love to rent again. Relaxing Getaway

This cozy cottage provided a well needed escape. The house is clean, inviting and has lots of character. We spent a good bit of the morning sitting on the porch and watching the waves roll in. At night, there weren't many lights around (we stayed during the off-season) and the sky was incredible. It seemed like we could see every star in the sky. With the fenced in back yard, we were able to let our dog run around while we relaxed in the hot tub. I think our dog had just as much fun as we did. Amy, the owner was very accommodating as well. She provided a lot of extras so we didn't even have to run to the store. We would love to stay here again.

Excellent, clean, relaxing, doggies loved it

This was the most enjoyable vacation we have had in years. It was on the spur of the moment as I wanted to surprise my husband for our 35th anniversary. We really needed to get away especially since we lost our home from Sandy. I knew that he wanted our dogs to be part of this vacation so I search for a dog friendly place. I found the best place ever! Amy the owner was so great. She would do anything for you, by asking if I needed anything special that she could get for me in order to keep the surprise going.....she was terrific. The house was so clean and had everything that anyone would want in it. The dogs really enjoyed the front porch and the fenced back yard. We enjoyed the hot tub and listening to the waves at night. The location was great, close to everything you needed and just a short walk to the beach. I would highly recommend this home and it is just perfect for a couple who need to get away.

Wonderful beyond expectation!

My boyfriend and I decided to stay in a house this time when we came into the area instead of a hotel. We desired the peace and quiet that came with a house, instead of hearing everyone else around us. When we walked through the door, I immediately fell in love! The décor was beautiful, and the home felt so cozy and inviting. Rolling over every morning and looking out of the bedroom window to look at the ocean across the street was so wonderful. The home itself had everything that one could ever imagine that they would ever need on a trip, and some that you think that you wouldn't! Miss Amy keeps everything in the house, and all you have to do is bring yourself! She was so helpful, and let us stay at the house on a very short notice. I can't imagine going back to a hotel now after staying at this house, and as long as Amy has it, we will be back! Thank you for a wonderful time that we will never forget!

humble perfection!

We just got back from a mini-vacation at this house this afternoon. Fantastic place! The location is incredible, less than a mile from several restaurants, bars, and groceries. The ocean is just across the street, and you can sit on the front porch and watch the waves do their thing. The front porch has a locking gate, so our dog was able to hang out there without fear of him finding his way off of the deck. The back yard has a fence and gate as well and the warm afternoon sun was awesome. You can pick up the wireless network from the backyard, which meant that we got to use the big table out there as our out-of-town office. The cottage itself is great. The heaters kept it comfortable temp wise, the bed is comfy, and the huge sectional couch is *awesome* for lounging. There are puzzles, games, and loads of movies for staying in, and the kitchen is well stocked with spices and cooking supplies (pots/pans, decent knives, spatulas, etc). Perhaps most importantly: Amy (the owner) is GREAT! It's awesome to deal with an individual instead of a crappy rental company. Pricing was easy and affordable, especially considering the radness level of this house. All in all, it was a great trip, and I'd recommend this property to friends, family, complete strangers who aren't a-holes, you name it. We are already trying to plan a time to go back.

Charming cottage with very good beach access

We stayed at this lovely home during Easter weekend and we were very happy with our accommodations. Everything was clean and tidy and the house was well stocked with kitchen items and also tons of movies. The master bed was very comfortable and all the linens were provided and were good quality. The beach access is just down the street and the location was great overall. The owner, Amy, made us feel at home and was very helpful with any questions. The hot tub was nice since it was cool during our stay and our dog loved having the fenced back yard. We will definitely be back!

What a wonderful, zen place to stay.

Arrived after a long drive & was so pleasantly surprised with this place! Amy has made this the MOST comfortable & quaint place....it was hard to leave, truly! Our two doggies, Bennie & Ellen, were fortunate enough (along w/us) to get to meet Amy in person! My dogs are 7 y/olds & I don't believe my hubby & I have EVER seen her have as much fun as she & Bennie did running down the beach across the street. We were laughing so hard at how happy & frisky she was there, our stomach muscles were sore! Don't pass up this opportunity. The night we arrived, another couple came to Amy & said that they had looked at her place, but booked another & that it was HORRIBLE. Asked if they could rent that day & she had to tell them "sorry, I have others staying now". When we come back here, this is the ONLY place we will look for. Comfortable place-great location!

We just returned from our stay at the Outer Banks Escape and cannot say enough about the cleanliness of the space and the convenience of the location. Amy truly goes out of her way to provide a well equipped vacation rental in providing all the extras--it saved us so much $$. We will return next year for sure.

VACATION FOR OUR DOG!

It seems that all the previous reviews say everything I would say about Amy, the cleanliness of the cabin, how well equipped the kitchen and bathroom were, the location, etc, etc. I notice from the pictures that Amy has added a beautiful wood structure around the hot tub and she mentioned she was having a curtain made to give it more privacy. Our little maltipoo was very much at home and loved sitting on the back of the couch watching all the action out the windows. We thanked Amy for making her cottage dog-friendly. We would certainly recommend it to anyone. A friend of our recommended a restuarant called Mama Quan's around milepost 10. It was very good and a fun atmosphere. We enjoyed the Jockey Ridge State Park and also the beautiful park and lighthouse in Corolla (both dog-friendly).

An AMAZING place!

My kids, 2 dogs and I stayed for 3 nights here which was way too short for us. This place is wonderful!! Super clean..everything we needed..felt like we were at home. I highly recommend Amy's place. She's wonderful too!! The mountains called us back to West Virginia, but don't worry...we'll definitely be back to this house as soon as we can!

Awesome vacation

We spent Thanksgiving week in this lovely cottage. It was wonderful not having to pack the usual "going to the beach stuff". Sheets, towels, kitchen supplies... all were there waiting for us. The cottage is cozy and clean and as close to ocean front as you can get without sitting on the water. Our dog loved it too. All this and the price was extremely reasonable. Would we stay there again? Can't wait!

Wonderful Get-Away!

This sweet beach cottage is exactly as described and super clean and well provisioned. The owner, Amy, is attentive and accessible and has gone out of her way to provide everything you need for a lovely get-away. (Amy could give seminars in customer service and I say that as someone who spent 20 years in the industry). The location is convenient - you're directly across from the beach (1 row of houses and the road between the cottage and the beach) and the public beach access is just 2 houses down. There are grocery stores and an inexpensive t-shirt/beach-gear store (Wings) within a mile or so across the highway. We didn't eat out as the kitchen was so well provisioned that it was a pleasure to use it and dine in. The quiet backyard and spotless hot tub were also a highlight of the stay. We had a wonderful weekend, it was a joy to bring our dog with us, and I've already recommended the cottage to 3 or 4 people and we've only been home for a day. Thanks, Amy, for providing such a great spot to Escape at Kitty Hawk! We'll definitely return.

Hello fellow travelers and beach lovers! During the real estate boom I saved this little, decrepit 1951 cottage by the sea from being bulldozed by builders that wanted to add another huge rental machine to the Outer Banks. Everyone thought I was crazy and some days I thought the same!

Gidget's Dream had been neglected for decades so I started the long process of reviving it to it's former self. I replaced the roof, the plumbing, windows and the electrical system. I tore out walls and found 2 time capsules from the 1960's! I updated the kitchen, added a washer/dryer and refinished most of the 70 year old wood floors, just to name a few of the projects accomplished!

It has been a labor of love, a serious learning experience in "This Old House" improvements and all in all, a beautiful/crazy adventure creating wonderful place for my guests to make memories.

To add to the charm of this property there is an original 1950's detached Dory boat building that has been converted into a tiny house for me!

The restoration of "Kahuna's Shack" exterior juniper lap siding began in the spring and is a laborious effort of scraping 70 years of more than 4 coats of peeling paint. While the effort continues, the process will take months to finish so an apology in advance for the weathered look of the building. Restoration on the detached tiny home will continue in the fall as not to be intrusive while you are here.

I have lived on the Outer Banks for 20 years and I adore helping my guests find a great restaurant, cool activity, a peaceful spot to watch an amazing sunset over the water or to point them in the right direction of the best local sightseeing tours, fishing trips or wild mustang excursions. I love sharing my little cottage with so much beach history with others.

Due to traveling around the world my goal is to help you fall in love with the Outer Banks as much as I have and to make your vacation as relaxing and enjoyable as possible!

Gidget's Dream was built in 1951 and has all the charm of a mid century beach cottage with wood floors and a larger lot with trees. She has survived all the big hurricanes of the past 75 years and is ready to take on the next several decades of storms.
