Encompassing North Ballachulish and South Ballachulish, these two villages were separated until 1975 when the Ballachulish Bridge opened. North Ballachulish sits just across the bridge while South Ballachulish lies 3 miles to the east on the southern side. North Ballachulish offers a hotel and petrol station/shop, whilst South Ballachulish has a supermarket, coffee shop, Post Office, pubs, hotels and a Tourist Information Centre/gift shop. Ballachulish attracts many visitors throughout the year and is a perfect base for those wishing to enjoy outdoor pursuits. Ballachulish once had a major slate quarrying operation which continued for over 250 years until 1955 when the quarry was closed and today the old quarries are now being reclaimed by nature and the area is famous once again but this time as an idyllic holiday location.
