Town: Bishop's Waltham, a lovely little medieval market town is nestled at the source of the River Hamble, right on the edge of South Downs National Park. The town enjoys plenty of pleasantries with traditional shopping, pub lunches and a visit to the remains of Bishop's Waltham Palace, the ancient residence of the bishop of Winchester and ruined by Oliver Cromwell. This historical palace was destroyed in 1644 but there are still extensive ruins which are worth a look. Winchester, the historic and intriguing city that served as England's ancient capital, is within reach via car or bus. The town is also ideally located a short drive from Portsmouth which will offer plenty of coastal activities at a sandy beach.
