Stay in a beautifully restored former Victorian mission hall just minutes from Canary Wharf. This unique loft-style home combines industrial design and historic architecture in one unforgettable East London stay.
• Large double-height living space with mezzanine bedrooms • Original spiral staircase, crittall windows & restored period details • 5 mins walk to All Saints DLR & quick access to Canary Wharf • Free private parking space included
Set within the historic St Frideswides Mission complex in Poplar, this converted Victorian mission hall offers a unique stay full of character, original architectural detail and an unmistakable East London atmosphere. Originally developed in the late 1800s by members of Christ Church College, Oxford, the building has been carefully refurbished while preserving many of its historic features and industrial character.
The heart of the home is the impressive double-height open-plan living area, where exposed brickwork, cast iron columns, original-style crittall windows and a striking black spiral staircase create a distinctive warehouse-style feel. The living and dining space is bright and sociable, with plenty of room for groups to relax together, while the kitchen combines modern fittings with reclaimed materials and bespoke concrete worktops. Throughout the property, the mix of old and new gives the space a creative and lived-in character rather than a polished hotel feel.
The property is arranged across split levels and includes three bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. On the mezzanine level are two double bedrooms positioned behind floor-to-ceiling internal crittall-style glass partitions overlooking the main living space below. These rooms maintain the open loft atmosphere of the building while still offering comfortable and private sleeping areas, each with an ensuite shower room.
On the lower ground floor is a more secluded bedroom with a king-size bed and a spacious wet-room style ensuite bathroom. Guests staying on this level may notice a slightly earthy or old-building scent in this area, which is fairly typical of converted Victorian and former church properties. This is limited to the lower level and reflects the age and historic nature of the building.
The refurbishment completed between 2019 and 2021 introduced several modern improvements including underfloor heating across the ground floor, updated electrics and plumbing, smart lighting and heating controls, ambient LED lighting and contemporary bathrooms throughout. Many original features were retained and restored during the renovation, including decorative windows, crittall-style glazing and reclaimed materials such as the Welsh slate creamery worktop in the utility area.
The property is very well connected for exploring London. All Saints DLR station is less than a 5-minute walk away, providing quick access to Canary Wharf, Bank, Stratford and the Elizabeth Line. The nearby A12 and A13 also make travelling by car straightforward, while the surrounding streets retain a more residential neighbourhood feel with local cafés, markets and riverside walks nearby.
