Alms House West, Grade II Listed, Garden & Patio

Summary:

Part of the historic Alms Houses designed by celebrated Victorian Arts & Crafts architect William Burges, this charming home blends heritage with comfort. Thoughtfully updated, it features a well-equipped kitchen, dining room, and a cosy lounge with a wood burner and a smart TV. Next door, enjoy a luxurious bathroom with a roll-top bath. Upstairs, find a super-king/twin and a small double bedroom. Relax in the garden with patio seating and sweeping countryside views.

The Space:

Rich in history and charm, this two-bedroom home forms one of the Alms Houses designed by renowned Victorian Arts and Crafts architect William Burges in 1863. Set within the historic Forthampton Estate and cared for by the same family for nine generations, it enjoys an exceptionally peaceful rural setting.

Park at the base of the hill and wander past the church and churchyard to reach the cottages, where wide-reaching views extend across the Malvern Hills, the Severn Valley and towards the Cotswolds - a wonderful spot for morning coffee or a sunset drink.

The garden includes the historic “Whistling Well,” once the property’s water supply. While the neighbouring church, village pond and old stocks add to the area’s sense of heritage.

Inside, period character meets modern comfort. A well-equipped kitchen offers all the essentials and leads to a separate dining room and a cosy sitting room with a wood burner and a smart TV. On the ground floor, you’ll also find a generous bathroom featuring a roll-top bath, shower and loo.

Two staircases lead upstairs to the bedrooms: one small double room and one super-king, which can also be arranged as a twin (on request). Both peaceful and full of character. Outside, the garden and patio seating provide an ideal place to relax and take in the countryside surroundings.

Free parking is available on the lane at the end of the path leading to the cottages, a short walk via a tarmac path and through the churchyard.

Up to two dogs are welcome (an additional fee of £20/dog applies).

Both the East and West houses are available to book if you require accommodation for larger groups of up to 8 guests. They are linked in the boot room by an interconnecting door, which can be unlocked if you book both properties. Please get in touch if you are interested.

Guest Access:

Guests have access to the whole house and garden.

The Neighborhood:

The Alms Houses are ideally situated for discovering the rolling countryside of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and the northern Cotswolds, with a wealth of attractions close at hand.

For provisions, Ledbury Road Services on the route to Tewkesbury is your nearest stop, offering local produce, freshly baked bread, groceries, coffee, wine and beer. Just ten minutes away by car, The Butcher’s Arms in Eldersfield is a must for food lovers. This Michelin-star village pub serves outstanding seasonal dishes in a charming rural setting. Reservations are highly recommended, though you can always relax with a drink in the garden.

The historic town of Tewkesbury is nearby, famed for its magnificent 12th-century Abbey - one of the finest Norman buildings in the country. Stroll through its atmospheric medieval lanes before visiting the John Moore Museum, set within remarkable 14th-century timber-framed buildings, which also include a restored merchant’s house and the oldest Baptist chapel.

Within half an hour, explore the Saxon heritage of Deerhurst, tour the impressive Eastnor Castle and its parkland, or enjoy fresh seafood at the acclaimed Severn & Wye Smokery in Westbury-on-Severn. Opposite lies Westbury Court Garden, a beautifully restored National Trust Dutch water garden.

For sweeping views, head to the Malvern Hills, or wander the landscaped grounds of Croome Court. The stylish spa town of Cheltenham offers festivals, theatres and galleries.

The Cotswolds are equally accessible. Discover Broadway, climb Broadway Tower, explore Hidcote Gardens, Stanway House, and the Chipping Campden Barn Museum, or visit the Cotswold Lavender Farm in bloom during summer.

Getting Around:

Due to the remote nature of the area, we would recommend bringing a car for your stay. Ample street parking is available at the end of the path that leads to the Alms Houses.

Other Things to Note:

Both the East and West houses are available to book if you require accommodation for larger groups of up to 8 guests. They are linked in the boot room by an interconnecting door, which can be unlocked if you book both properties. Please get in touch if you are interested.

The default bed configuration is one queen and one super-king. The super-king will only be made up as a twin on request, so please let us know when booking if you require this.

Interaction with Guests:

We will be available via message, email and phone during your stay. Any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
