I booked a villa through VRBO, and shortly after, I was contacted by Algarve Vacations, who claimed to be the property managers. I paid the booking deposit through VRBO and the balance directly to Algarve Vacations. About two months before the trip, I received a WhatsApp call from Algarve Vacations to explain details about the villa, the area, and the check-in process.So, when I later received a WhatsApp message from a woman claiming to be from Algarve Vacations requesting a security deposit, I thought nothing of it. She had my full name (spelled correctly), the property name, and our exact booking dates. It all seemed legitimate — but unfortunately, it was a scam, and I lost 400.About two weeks before our holiday, I then received another email asking for a security deposit. Given the earlier scam, I refused to click the link and called Algarve Vacations instead. They confirmed they were aware of scammers and said they were investigating a possible data breach.Once we arrived at the villa, we found several maintenance issues:•A punch hole in a door•Broken cupboard doors•Blocked sink and showers•General wear and tear that should have been addressed before guests arrivedDespite this, I was still contacted repeatedly about the security deposit.
