Set within an impressive Victorian townhouse, The Wheelhouse boasts some of the most stunning, wall-to-wall vistas of the Fowey River, the coastline beyond the beautiful Readymoney Cove beach, and out to the English Channel. There are excellent restaurants nearby, as well as lovely beaches to explore, including Readymoney Cove and Lantic Bay.
The apartment is accessed via one flights of stone steps and a further four short flights of stairs inside, so may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues. However, this elevated position is what gives this hidden gem its commanding views, high above the Esplanade below.
Inside, the open-plan living and dining space is tastefully decorated with a subtle nautical theme and features a 55" Smart TV and ample, comfortable seating – that is, if you can tear yourself away from the spectacular views! The spacious kitchen includes everything you’ll need for your stay: electric oven, gas hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, along with generous worktop and storage space.
There are two bedrooms: one with twin beds, a period feature fireplace, and a gentle nod to Kenneth Grahame – author of The Wind in the Willows – who found inspiration in Fowey for his bedtime stories. The main bedroom features a sumptuous double bed and an en-suite shower room. There is also a further family shower room, adding to the bright, airy and relaxing feel of the apartment.
Fowey is a thriving port town with an abundance of charm. Its narrow streets are lined with pubs, restaurants and boutique shops, all set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The harbour is alive with boats of all kinds, while the estuary leads inland through a tranquil, tree-lined valley ideal for woodland walks.
Take the ferry to Bodinnick, or explore the historic harbours of Looe and Polperro – both steeped in tales of smuggling and shipwrecks, and full of quaint fishermen’s cottages and breathtaking coastal views. Just a short drive to the west lies Charlestown, a beautifully preserved harbour frozen in time. Home to a fleet of tall ships, it has featured in numerous films and TV series thanks to its authenticity. The Shipwreck Museum and local eateries make it well worth a visit.
