The Space:
Spread across three floors, Austen House is homely and welcoming. Ideal for the whole family.
The living room has comfortable sofas and a flat screen TV making it the ideal place to relax together after a busy day. There is also a brand new wood burning stove for guests to enjoy in the living room.
The kitchen diner has everything you could need to make the most of your self-catering stay. Traditional in style, the space includes an exposed brick hearth and a large wooden dining table.
The house boasts four spacious bedrooms. On the first floor, you’ll find a king bedroom, twin room and a shower room. Take the stairs up to the second floor and there is another king room, twin room plus a bathroom with a traditional freestanding bathtub.
Outside you’ll find an enclosed courtyard garden with outdoor furniture. This space includes a table with eight chairs so it’s perfect for al fresco dining and enjoying quality time with your loved ones outside. A rarity in Whitby - this outside space is a real bonus!
A third shower room is located in the basement.
Guest Access:
Guests have access to the full house.
The keys to Austen House are accessed via a secure key safe and full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date.
We provide a parking scratch card for your stay which gives you free parking in the W zones in Whitby. Additional free parking can be found nearby, and full details will be sent to you before check in.
The Neighborhood:
Set on the West side of Whitby, Austen House is just a short 5 minute walk into the centre of town. Head to Pier Road and you’ll find cosy pubs, fun arcades and plenty of fish restaurants. Continue along the lively road until you reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts. At the other end of Pier Road, you’ll notice the swing bridge which sits over the River Esk.
Over the bridge, you’ll find yourself on the East bank which is full of narrow medieval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and even more fish restaurants. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.
Step outside of Whitby and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland. Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park so it’s the perfect place for long walks.
Getting Around:
The centre of Whitby is a 5 minute walk from Austen House.
Whitby train station is just a ten minute walk away so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.
There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.
Other Things to Note:
Please note that there are lots of stairs at the property. There are stairs leading into the property as can be seen on the photos and 3 flights of stairs in the house itself – basement kitchen to ground floor, ground to 1st and 1st to 2nd. This is not recommended to people with mobility issues, as is the same with much of Whitby since it is likely to be a struggle for people with mobility challenges.
Interaction with Guests:
We’re always available for our guests so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
