Relaxed Family Cottage in Matlock | Ideal Peak District Base | 4 Guests

Bathmans Cottage is a historic two bedroom cottage located in the heart of the market town of Matlock, right on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Originally built and used by the famous Smedley Hydros as part of their hydropathic centre, the cottage has been thoughtfully renovated to a modern, high standard while carefully retaining its historic character.

The cottage offers a comfortable and welcoming base for exploring Matlock, the Peak District and the surrounding countryside. With one private parking space directly outside, it provides a rare convenience for such a central town location.

On the ground floor, guests are welcomed via a private enclosed seating area to the front of the cottage, which enjoys the sun throughout the day in summer and is a lovely spot for morning coffee or relaxing in the evening. This leads into a large entrance hallway and through to the main living space.

The living area is spacious and inviting, featuring luxurious sofas, a modern electric fire, a Smart TV with Sky Q, fibre broadband Wi-Fi, and a PlayStation with games, making it ideal for both relaxing evenings and family stays. The generous kitchen and dining area is fully equipped with everything needed for a comfortable visit, including a double fridge freezer, gas hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and combined tumble dryer, along with all necessary utensils and crockery.

Upstairs, a large landing leads to the two bedrooms and bathrooms. The main bedroom features a super king size bed, a Smart TV with Sky Q, and its own en suite bathroom with a large ceiling and a light, airy feel, creating a calm and private retreat. The second bedroom can be arranged as either a twin or a super king and also includes a Smart TV with Sky Q, making it flexible for couples or families.

The main bathroom is located just outside the bedrooms and features both a large separate shower and a freestanding bath, set beneath high ceilings that add to the sense of space and character.

The cottage benefits from central heating throughout, controlled by Hive, a combi boiler providing plenty of hot water, and excellent Wi-Fi.

Matlock is a lively and characterful town with a wide choice of pubs, cafés, shops and bakeries, all within a ten minute walk. The town is well served by regular bus routes and good transport links to Sheffield, Chesterfield and Derby, making it easy to explore the wider area without relying on the car.

For keen walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, Bathmans Cottage is an ideal home from home after a day exploring the surrounding hills, trails and Peak District scenery. Dog friendly and full of character, it offers a relaxed and comfortable base for couples, friends or small families looking to enjoy both town life and countryside adventures.

Lovely stay in a beautiful home.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The property was clean and had great facilities. It was clear a lot of thought had gone into the property to make it a relaxing place to stay. Matlock was a really nice town - we loved the independent shops and tried some of the local pubs including the Thorn Tree Inn and The Farmacy. Would love to return here in the future. Daniel was exceptionally helpful when we booked so thank you.

Hi Rachel- We are glad you enjoyed Bathman’s. We purchased the property in the first lockdown last year and spent the second lockdown renovating it. As soon as we walked through the door we realised it would make a great holiday let. The Thorn Tree pub is definitely my favourite just 2 minutes walk with superb views over Matlock.

Great stay

Lovely Cottage with all the amenities you would want . Location is good near the town centre up quite a steep hill but we are in our seventies and managed it without a problem and found it good exercise. We had no real complaints and would highly recommend.

Fantastic stay here. The property was immaculate, time had really been spent making sure that the property was clean. There is everything in the house that you could possibly need for your stay. We loved it that there was a television in both of the bedrooms as well as the lounge. Highly recommend.

Beautiful property which was very well finished. Super comfy beds and sofas, great showers and all appliances. Daniel was quick to respond and helpful throughout. Some comments in reviews about parking, I found this perfect and easy to navigate (and I have a pretty big Estate car). Really recommended property for exploring Matlock. Yes there are hills but it is the Peak district!

Amazing property and great location for stay in the Derbyshire Dales

The property is immaculate. Everything you need for your stay is within the cottage and there has been no expense spared on quality. Comfortable beds, very nice bedding, SKY TV in every room, amazing / spacious showers and a fully equipped kitchen. The sitting room is a great size, and if anything the pictures on the web site do not do the cottage justice. Internally is actually bigger than what the pictures suggest - something very rare these days! Would definitely recommend, and would have no hesitation in staying there again. The whole family loved it. A home from home!

Very comfortable stay in lovely cottage

We found the cottage very comfortable with good quality furnishing, decor and well equipped. The cottage was spotless. It was situated up a very long and steep hill so the walk in and out of town would depend upon your level of fitness, I would estimate it as being about 0.5 mile. Good drinking pubs close by, we did not try the eating pubs close to the cottage but went down to the town. Good sandwich bar 50yds away (also does bacon rolls). Great to have own off street parking space. Would stay in the cottage again if going to Matlock and highly recommend it.

Beautiful clean excellently equipped house in Matlock. Great parking, exceptionally clean. Large and spacious with an amazing kitchen and beautiful bathrooms. Lots of hot water. Great communication. Only downside for us as seniors was the very hilly area. We love to walk but the high location of this lovely home meant we preferred to drive, and therefore park, to visit the town. Beautiful house. Luxury cottage, perfect stay

Had a wonderful stay at Bathmans with our 18month old son. The quality of the furnishing and decor was far better than the pictures showed, felt genuinely luxurious. Location wise be aware it is on the top of the hill so a walk into town is quite taxing on the way back! But you can’t argue it’s brilliantly located for easy access to town (and lots of town centre parking of an evening) and for accessing other key places it’s brilliant. A short drive to Bakewell, Chatsworth etc. Access is down some very steep steps at the back so not good for those with mobility issues, but interior is lovely. Fair warning to anyone arriving on a Sunday who doesn’t know the area - there were virtually no places serving food (non of the local pubs etc) and lots of restaurants shut too. Overall a perfect little holiday and we’d love to come back again.

Thanks for the comprehensive review Vicki, pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay particularly the area, fortunately there are some pubs and shops up the hill nearby so those that prefer not walking too far still have lots of options. Guests with limited mobility can also access through the front door where there is a very small step to access from the roadside.

We chose this area because it offers the perfect balance between town life and easy access to the Peak District. Matlock has a lively, welcoming feel with plenty to see and do, yet you are never far from open countryside, walking routes and scenic views. It makes it easy to enjoy both relaxed days close to home and more active days exploring the surrounding area.

What we enjoy most is the variety the area offers for families. You can walk into town for shops, cafés and attractions, spend time outdoors nearby, or head slightly further afield into the Peak District for days out and adventures. We have spent a lot of time here ourselves and love how convenient and flexible the location is, making it a great base for guests who want a comfortable stay with plenty of options on the doorstep.

What makes this property unique is the space and comfort it offers for family stays, combined with a thoughtful layout and modern finish. The cottage has been carefully renovated to provide generous living areas, a large kitchen and flexible bedroom arrangements, making it easy for families to relax together without feeling cramped.

Both bathrooms are a real feature, with high ceilings, plenty of natural light and a mix of a large shower and a separate bath, which works especially well for families. Added touches such as Smart TVs with Sky Q in every bedroom, strong Wi-Fi, parking outside and outdoor seating areas help make the stay easy and comfortable.

Rather than feeling like a typical holiday let, the cottage feels practical, welcoming and well set up for family life, offering a relaxed base for enjoying Matlock and the nearby Peak District.
