We are surprised to read this type of review and feel genuine sadness that this was the guest’s experience. We imagine that this was a difficult time for this guest, which is understandable given their recent loss. This likely negatively coloured their entire experience, evidenced by the absence of positive aspects mentioned. Reading the review we see no mention of anything positive, which is an important clue. After hosting hundreds of people, not a single one has dissected the house to negatively comment on it publicly (e.g., looking behind mirrors to point out a flaw in the wall). Reviews on other booking sites (we are relatively new to VRBO) show that people uniformly enjoy the top-of-the-line appliances, dearly expensive aspects of the property (e.g., the master bathroom alone is a $50,000 investment), professionally designed interiors, quietness, host attentiveness, ambiance, fully equipped kitchen, cleanliness, rich library, and other noteworthy aspects. Instead, it appears that this guest’s sole focus was on what was wrong, and no property can withstand this critical approach. We also noticed there was no mention of the efforts made to accommodate request for a gathering (even through it would break rules), or that his short-notice reservation required pushing adjacent reservations to accommodate his requests. It might be helpful for future guests to know that the guest was reached out to multiple times during the stay and nothing amiss was mentioned until after checkout in this public review. Reaching out to guests is a host’s only method of offering help if anything was needed—responding after checkout doesn’t allow the host to help. It is true that prior to check-in there was a delay by the cleaning team and this was communicated prior to the check-in time. The guest was offered the opportunity to check in on time, or wait a short period for the dryer to complete its cycle. Instead of responding he showed up at the house (prior to check in time), creating an uncomfortable situation for the cleaning staff diligently preparing the house for him. We hope that the guest can reflect on the positive aspects of his stay and recognize the sincere efforts of the team working to provide a positive experience for him during a painful situation. Future guests will receive courtesy and attention, and we sincerely hope you as a future guest enjoy the experience like the hundreds of other happy guests before you.
